Subject: »PIIGS - economics problems

Message deleted

Labor unions are in Europe too strong imo. It's a severe economic crisis ( certainly in Greece ), so you shouldn't be complaining if the government is - in cooperation with the European Union - trying to solve the problem.

( previous posts were made so you wouldn't hear Relax all the time )

Same question over here.

That could help for the EU, but it would be a prompt bankruptcy for Greece. They could go down even to the Ukrainian/Middle-Asian level... and that isn't good for anyone. Especially the tourists.
The solution is to take away one of their national sports from the Greek people... tax evasion. (for example there are ~300 swimming pool in Athens, if we assume that the taxpayers said the truth; but from a helicopter you could see ~20000 pools there...)
Tax evasion is our national sport! ;-) Problem is just that Greece lied about their economic situation, so now they have to pay for that. And they should accept it.

Some do accept it ... the government. The majority (the population) obviously does not.

That majority should start thinking now, they need the European Union and the IMF ...

( it would be interesting if a Greek would join this discussion )

Greece should sell some of theyrs Islands. And everythink will be ok.
And if they will earn some money, can buy this islands back in future for example 10 yeras.
That was proposed on Belgian television as a joke too ;-)

Do you think all the money that is spent will help?
The labor unions tell Greek people to strike, how stupid is that?

The country has no money and people are still striking and not even trying to improve their economical situation!
The retirement age is much lower as in most other European countries (especially those in the EU), the hours people have to work much lower and they're striking because they'd have to abandon that if they wanna have even more help.

I just can't understand that.

True. It's very stupid to strike when a country is bankrupt. Maybe that is a good idea, no money till everyone is back to work. No time for strike when you need to earn money and help your country. But it's much easier to get it from your neighbours :S Greeks who are on strike should be a ashamed!!

And all countries should higher the age for retirement, specially when you need a lot of help from the EU.

well when you consider it, the only proper way to make money is to sell stuff...so they have to sell something...

ireland is lending 121billion to greece (not sure if thats the total from all eu countries or if thats just us!)... and we're in debt... so it makes no sense whatsoever

but if greece goes down, the euro takes a hammering, and everything every country owns goes down in value by maybe double the amount needed to loan greece, so either way there are losses..loaning, thats possibly the cheapest alternative...

sum...
2010-05-04 16:19:58
Well to be hones loaning is one of the reasons for the whole crisis. Fighting the devil by a new, bigger, devil is not really a good idea...
2010-05-04 16:25:22
Not to mention it is the only idea ... What is wrong with it?
I'm sure like Chuck said that is not from Ireland alone, 121 billion is a bit much, isn't it? Total amount is 110 billion, of which 80 billion is from EU. Germany lends the most ( 22,4 billion ), Belgium lends 1,1 billion.

Well to be honest I'm not an economist, not even well economically oriented. But if they have such problems now with 'floating alive' then they will probably still have them after they get the money from other EU countries, IF they keep current approach to living and working. And the workers attitude shows, that it rather won't change.

In my opinion they should be given the loan, but on many conditions, for example changing the retirement age. If they won't agree to fulfill the conditions then there should be no such help...because the situation will only aggravate - the bankruptcy will be just postponed by some years...
