Subject: Winter Olympics 2014 Sochi

Do not talk about policy in this topic.
2014-02-21 09:16:33
Well I think it is important that if someone said "putin is..." this doesn't equal "russians are.."/"russia is.." and I think the consensus about Putin in the rest of the world is quite clear (just like with Berlusconi) and this is because of some of his rules where a majority thinks, they do not make the world any better (third term election, press freedom/freedom of speech limitations, corruption, policy about homosexuality, etc). While it surely is forbidden to make any political remarks in Russia by law, when talking about Sochi, I still think you must be allowed to talk about the country the olympics are in and we always did that in the past, like we did when China was hosting the summer olympics. It's not only sports, the hosting country and it's culture imho are part of the olympics.

Anyways check out Sir David Attenborough, how he describes curling.

Okay...

Quite frankly, I don't give a shit about what you want.
2014-02-21 16:27:35
I'm trying to say that you should not criticize people who are trying to make the world better

Jailing his opponents (Navalny, Khodorkovsky, Pussy Riot...), lack of freedom of speech, closing radiostations and newspapers who are against him, laws against homosexuality, corruption...
You really think those things will make the world better? I have absolutely nothing against regular russians. Putin and his puppets on the other hand..

Anyway.. Back to sports. Brilliant final between USA and Canada yesterday in womens icehockey. Hopefully men can do the same today, with same result.

I don't think you picked up the best exemples...
You should have a look on what Khodorkovsky did with his friend Yeltsin. imho, a trip in a siberian goulag was deserved.
About Pussy Riot, have you tried to listen to a song?... well, I think they should be jailed as criminals against music...

Yup, I know he's not exactly a "good" man but there were many others just like him and nothing happened to them because they supported Putin.

I'd say most todays (MTV) artists should be jailed as criminals against music.. ;)

У вас в сообщении есть слова, которые наводят на мысль, что у вас не всё в порядке с умом

English please!!

No, it's not.

Yes it is, read the rules :/

Only the speed skating event team pursuit is a knock out system, all other events are races against the clock. Short track is all knock out system.

You can't just simply change a sport too much or else it isn't that sport anymore or it even becomes another sport which already exists, like changing speed skating too much so it becomes like short track, which already is an existing sport.

No need for that arrogant smilie. Maybe you need to read rules if you think the mode of shorttrack is the same as the one of snowboard (giant) slalom.

They could at least introduce some k.o./head-to-head system as in the snowboard giant slalom for example.

That's a different sport called shorttrack ;)

please, explain me what are the rules of snowboard giant slalom, I thought it is the time margin in pairs what indicates a winner, am I wrong?

That's your own interpretation of this smiley! For me it isn't an arrogant smiley, it is an annoyed smiley because you clearly don't know the sport and you keep suggesting impossible and/or already existing events ....

So again, speed skating + knock out = short track and head-to-head is only speed skating team persuit (yesterday qualifiers and today's finals), but this is impossible to introduce with allmost all speed skating distances because you can't expect 3, 4 or even more runs + a final run with 5000m and 10000m men, and 3000m and 5000m women, and maybe even impossible for all distances.

To make it more clear, it's like suggesting a knock out/head-to-head system for the Downhill and Super-G events, that's also impossible for the athletes, they simply can't handle so many runs in such a short time. And if you change Downhill so skiing events will attract more and new people, for example introduce more jumps and corners and a knock out system, you get Ski Cross (which already exist as a sport).

But existing alpine skiing events aren't deleted because of new sports, as some sport make the Olympics for what they are for a really long time now (sports is often nostalgia), like speed skating (1924), cross-country skiing (1924), alpine skiing (1936), etc.

sochi2014.com: About Snowboarding :)

Well, technically it really isn't the same, because short track is (like in the name) on a shorter track and it isn't two seperate lines with knockout (like parallel giant slalom, it is a rumble of many participants on the same track.

But I think it is true that it would be hard to have that many participants doing two face-offs against each other and what is boring and what isn't is mostly determined by what you are used to watch. Many women would argue that soccer is very boring or watching Bolt for less than 10 seconds. :D

Why are athletes from the nederlands so good at speed skating and not so good at short track? Do asians have an advantage because of being smaller and more agile? Just wondering.
2014-02-22 13:55:09
Short track has never been a big sport in the Netherlands, it never got the attention like speed skating and soccer (the other national sport). On the Dutch tv every winter you can watch almost all the national and international speed skating championships and also the international competition, so many weekend from the beginning of November till the end of March you can't turn on the tv and not see any speed skating ;)

And when it gets that much attention many new skaters will start doing (also from a young age) so talented skaters are found more easily. And also because former Olympic and world champions are now training the new athletes, their knowledge is learned to the new generations. And ofcourse many sponsors, money makes the world go round.

And some start with skeelers but eventually will also start speed skating because the skeeler sport isn't an Olympic sport (yet). Also many of the non-Dutch speed skaters are former skeeler champions, while many of the Asians are former short trackers who didn't had the speed for short track but are good at a longer track, or too much competition in their country and less with speed skating so much more chance to represent their country with international events (like Olympic Games).

Short track is for Asian (specially South-Koreans) what speed skating is for the Dutch, with tv and right sponsors you get the athletes and trainers. But I think the size of athletes (shorter) does help the athletes to be good short trackers, specially at shorter distances. But times are changing as we have seen this Olympics, Europeans are also starting to win medals now and that's good for the sport. The 4 clean sweeps of the Dutch with speed skating are ofcourse great for us, but can hurt the sport.

They can divide it over severals days. I agree it might not be possible for the longest distances, but surely for the shorter ones (like qualification and then eight-/quarterfinals = 4-5 races). It also gives more athletes a chance to win a medal instead of some dominators like Wüst collecting one almost everywhere. Because you'd have to focus your energy on your favorite distance(s). Like in track&field, you don't see too many multiple winners over 800m and 1500m there for example.

To make it more clear, it's like suggesting a knock out/head-to-head system for the Downhill and Super-G events

Maybe that would be fun too :p but at least in downhill etc. not every run looks the same, and every track is different. There are key parts that make the run interesting, and where even ordinary people can tell whether it was done well or not. If they'd all just run down a straight line in the hill it would be equally boring.

But anyway, I only made suggestions how to make it as least a little exciting :p For me, speed skating is like a track and field race where every runner would do the rounds on his own - boring. If some people like it, I don't mind. Although I think quite a few of them wouldn't watch it either if it wasn't a good chance for some medals. :p
