huge

Could be the death knell for MSL........can the Galaxy really afford to pay him? This is what killed the NASL, signing big name has beens they couldn't afford.......unless they can get big TV money out of this(something I doubt) this could be a real bone head move.

TV, sponsors, sell out games, merchandise, hopefully attracting other big name players.

I really hope this is the jumpstart our country needs to finally get its act together

It won't, Beckham is smart, because he was washed up over in Europe anyway. Time to retire and live on the fat of the land in the good ol' USA :)

true, he'll be a huge celeb in LA.

it'll be like when Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Kings in the early 90's.

Apparently Beckham will only be paid about 10 million per season by the Galaxy, the rest is endorsements and such and an ownership stake in the team.so this isn't the train wreck I first thought it was..........if they can afford to pay him that(I'm not that familiar with MSL finances,it sure seems like way more than any of the MSL teams would be able to pay) it could work out nicely for the league just from the exposure aspect.

Most MLS franchises pay their players a couple hundred grand a year (according to Football Manager 2006). 10mil is huge.

He's 31 yo. This team is insane...

My thought:
MLS will be gone in two years, and Beckham will be begging someone in Europe to hire him.

Its funny. I barely knew the MLS existed still :)

I remember when i watched some matches in cable tv and the pitch had those football's (american football) stripes. It was so weird... :p

LOL, thats because soccer is the red headed stepchild sport of the USA.
2007-01-12 15:30:38
The money he is being paid is ridiculous, especially when I suspect others in the team won't be getting a fraction of that and he is now way past his best.

Yes, the real football is the step child in the US.
But I think it's going to change.
Look at all the kids that are playing soccer here. They need somebody to look up to. It's a very smart move from the managers of LA Galaxy to get Becks. He is more a celebrity anyhow. The interest will increase.
Between the NBA playoffs and the start of the NFL is a time frame where not so much sport is going on. Other then (yawn) Baseball...
Wait for Ronaldo. He will follow Becks. Ronaldo is either going to the US or to Saudi Arabia, but his time in Madrid is over...

Kids play soccer in the US only because it barely costs any money and can play it at a really young age.

Once they get into high school, they take their athletic coordination and apply it to real sports, like American football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey (in northern states) :)

Soccer's beauty is it takes virtually no equipment ot play. Which is why its the worlds game - anyone can afford it.

This is also exactly why its shunned by the US, I think.
