Subject: USA teams
watching the only game of soccer ESPN will play all week, tuesday at noon. champions league AC milan and OLyon.
I swallowed my tongue watching the first leg, maybe not the best matchup to watch, especially if you're someone who needs to be hooked on football, as it is football and not soccer. Btw, please don't post the results in this thread as some of us can't see them till Friday.

I didn't think you were serious. I just thought you were an alien, and needed to be rooted out and returned to Pluto or Myanus or something.
haha speaking of posting results.. the stupid ESPN ticker bar can give away the score of the few matches. it was supposed to be live but was delayed slightly because of another program.. racing or something. pretty lame
yea, meatheads are just incapable of understanding the beautiful game
"A soccer team with one super stud can do well in most circumstances, just like a basketball team with someone who can jump through the ceiling can succeed without a super team surrounding that one player."
I disagree - show me one super stud and I'll double or triple team him. In soccer it's more difficult for 1 good player to carry a team. Or it should be if the opposition is half-conscious. In basketball, your super-stud is 1/5th of the team. Big difference there from Soccer, 1/11th.
And while I absolutely love football (and the tactics that go with it), "one super stud" can carry a football team. They always seem to play QB, or at worst RB.
The difference between one stud carrying a team in football vs. soccer is that the QB always gets the ball. Every play runs through him (yes, I'm only talking offense).

Sorry, but that's not always true. I have coached FB teams with a super stud who could NOT carry the team, due to lack of depth across the field.

If the defense double- or triple-teams the super stud ... he will open the entire defense to his teammates .. and will usually STILL be able to score when needed. Have seen this often at the USA small-College level where that one super stud player simply outplays the entire opposition.
Both sports have a range of tactics, but some sports simply 'ride the wave' on the back of their super stud player/s.

Have to agree with Hav on this one, having played football at a fairly high level,no one succeeds without blockers, receivers etc..A super stud may raise the level of play of his teammates, but no one player can control a football game by himself(well on rare occassions it happens.)........In soccer a great player draws more attention when the defense can be structured, but there are so many instances(break aways, corners, scrambles in front of the goal etc.)where he can "get lost" and do his thing...........Both are team sports ,and a super player will raise the level of play of his mates in both sports, but football is a much more co-dependent game.
And I still think you see this in college football every week. A'la Mike Vick, Joe Hamilton, Vince Young, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Peyton Manning...

I just disagree with you on how much soccer rides this wave comparatively. And I won't deny that it does happen.
