Subject: Michael Vick
No need for me to flame. We disagree.
One year suspension won't be a deterrent. All they'll do with that is write a book, and get more money.
You want to deter this type of action? Ban him from the NFL for good.
Curious Codymac: Were you just as outraged when Imus got nailed earlier this year for the minor, minor little offcolor joke he made about the Rutgers women's basketball team?

Was I just as outraged about Imus as people are about Vick?
Absolutely not.
Again, Imus f*ed up, but it's stupid to me what a big deal was made of it. The media knows what it's doing. It focuses on American's right to be outraged and if a few people are ruined in the process, that's just the cost of doing business.
This whole thing was a big farce. Slow news night, let's see, Imus made some comments that we could blow up, make a good story out of, lets run it. Pretty soon you havea bunch of talking heads (I saw MSNBC had a panel of SEVEN(!!!!) people discussing it). I bet none of them listen to Imus, and even they do, I guarantee the truth was never one of their concerns. It's just like, we have to make this seem like a big deal, blow it up boys! Keep everyone tuned in! Where's the cross, tie him up there, quick! Oh man our ratings are doing pretty well! People are depresssed by the war. They are pretending it doesn't exist and changing the channel! Burn an old moron of a talk show host!
I mean whatever. I don't care about Imus, I just care about the fact that it is so easy to just barrage our nation with media, say things enough and they just become true, no matter how asinine a logical evaluation of the situation makes what they are doing seem.
It's sad. Americans are animals about this stuff. We like to get worked up, but once the adrenaline is gone, we wipe our minds clear and search for the next adrenaline builder.
Oh, and I give your attempt to paint me as a racist a 3/10.
Absolutely not.

codymac: I wasn't trying to paint you anything. Do you have a guilty conscience?
Trust me, if I was trying to paint you as anything in particular, I'd do a far better job of it then something warranting a 3 out of 10 :)
No, I mentioned Imus, because he did, imo, very little to have his personal character and career utterly destroyed by every blowhard NAACP and other African American leader (for example, Jesse jackson, the King of all blowhards) and media outlet.
You want to talk about 'much ado about nothing', Imus is a shining example. He made an offcolor comment or two he shouldn't have. He didn't execute any dogs, he didn't raise a dog fighting farm, he didn't gamble on dogfights.
My point in referencing Imus was simply this: I agree with you re: how the media overblows everything - to a degree. The media feeds the mob mentality of people. It's not just in America dude. Go anywhere supposedly 'intelligent' in the world, and you'll see the same thing.
Where I disagree with you, is in the actual act(s) itself. Vick is far, far more deserving of this fate then Imus was.
Imus didn't commit a single crime, much less a felony. Vick? Several.
Vick deserves everything he gets.

Yes, you got me, I have a guilty conscience.
And no, you can trust me: 3/10 will be your high score painting me as anything.
Anyways, I'll agree to disagree with you.
Vick's punishment only fits the crime in a society whose values are out of whack.

it's out of whack that michael vick made the money he did.
That he did something that now makes him unable to make that amount of money is irrelevant.
He did something that made him no longer attractive to consumers, so he lost the income he got by being phenominally attractive to consumers. Go figure.
Please stop confusing the harshness of the punishment with his inflated salary before the punishment. Fact is, he did something that makes him unable to do his job. That's unquestionable, no one is interested in cheering for him based on what he did.
Perhaps in 5 years people will forget.
Same would happen to any entertainer or politician.
If a president did this, they'd be impeached. So there you're taking the most powerful man in the world and making them a prisoner who can't even vote in the future. Is this any different? Or are you saying someone who did this should be allowed to remain president even tho most of the people in the country they represent are thinking it was a hideous action...

No more out of whack then the fact he, and thousands of other athletes, are paid tens of millions to play a game. Not just here in the US.
The values of society are out of whack in your opinion. Then again, perhaps society's values are okay, and it's yours that are out of whack, in reality?
Ultimately, it doesn't matter, now does it? That's what America's about. We do have laws, and Vick's broken several of them. That's indisputable, and he'll pay for that.
Whether you like it, or not.

@guac, well said. Hell if I did that I would surely lose my job and never get back into work in my field. It is all relative.
Frankly, I am disappointed Vick didn't decide to kill cats. I don't like cats. They are not particularly friendly, and puke up hairballs. And that includes KY Cats. He pukes them up too. On the field, in front of the opposing keeper. Really inappropriate if you ask me. Which you didn't.
i prefer eating gummy worms, they're bigger and more phallic.
@guac
I guess that's where we don't agree.
I can't stand seeing animals mistreated. When I take my 2yo fishing, I don't let her drag the damned perch all over the bank like some parents do, I get the fish back in the water ASAP. If my 5yo catches a caterpillar, I make her put it outside, not in a styrofoam cup to suffer.
Vick wasn't being cruel to animals for the sake of being cruel to animals. He was using them for sport. Just like the greyhounds mentioned in the article. Dog fighting isn't a sport I want anything to do with, mind you, but there's a world of difference between what he did and methodically seeking out animals with the sole purpose of mistreating them.
Throw the book at that guy, not at Vick.
"Hideous action"? Sounds like someone just completed their Outrage 101 class and got certified. ;-)

Come on. Tell me that you don't have an exception for cats. Particularly the nasty ones that sniff at you and then walk away.
Does anyone not see the irony that Llama has not commented?
