The one who deserves it is imo Ronaldo or Neuer. To be honest, I have no idea what Messi is doing there this year. But who will win it ... no idea.

Cristiano Ronaldo :-)

Well.. If messi should not be there, who would you nominate instead of him? He's the best Champions League Scorer, the best La Liga scorer, the best player on World Cup (well we can argue if he really was, but he has the official award). His performances are not worse than Cristiano's. So I am asking who should be there instead of him?

Fly Ronaldo

what about e.g. Robben?
I don't like him at all, but much more present at WC (unlike Messi), champion of Germany with Bayern (unlike Messi) and also a decent number of goals (if that seems to be a criterium for you).

what about e.g. Robben?

I can't think of a single dimension of the game in which Robben played better than Messi, especially in the World Cup. Suggesting Robben>Messi last years just proves that Messi is not competing against other players, but against expectations about Messi. Were his name John Smith, nobody would rate his performance in WC lower than top 3, certainly not lower than Robben (did he stand out at anything else than diving?)
2014-12-04 17:09:12
Are you kidding me? Messi top 3 in WC? never ;)
2014-12-04 17:47:29
Why? What is your top 3?

But you are right, the only thing such thing was decided he was actually top-1 :P
2014-12-04 19:15:22
the fact you even think Messi played a decent WC is a joke ... He was average on most games and his goals or decissive passes were very often the only remarkable action of his whole match.
2014-12-04 19:16:17
Wait, I thought you were the one proposing Robben :P
2014-12-04 19:19:53
yes, at leas that guy had some decent actions per game
2014-12-04 19:38:13

Once again, the only problem with Messi is that his footballing wasn't more than 9000.... :P

So basically Robben had some "decent" actions per game, while Messi had some (more) superb actions per game XD
There wasn't a single match in which Robben did for the Netherlands more than what Messi did for Argentina, that's a plain fact. Even if we count the dives as positive contributions :P
2014-12-04 21:42:41
well, I totally disagree on this one: there wasn't a single match in which Robben did for the Netherlands more than what Messi did for Argentina, that's a plain fact.

why defender never nominate at balon d' or ?
2014-12-11 14:59:50
Less often, but they are nominated and sometimes they even win. Too many times people make the link "best player=best forward" or at least "=best offensive player", though.

In any case, I don't know where the "shortlist" comes from. From then on, it's all up to certain people's votes. A "beauty contest" as any other.
