Subject: [GD] National Teams competitions

2020-05-19 13:44:54
Raul to All
We still have not decided about general season calendar, but meanwhile, it would be grat to start a discission about National Teams competitions.
We are open for ideas about additional competitions - maybe continental ones, or some other, sorted by National Team ranks.

Feel free for any proposals.

Personally I think continental competitions are better for users (because users can be closer in skill than what national teams can be), but in the "off-season" (ie non-world cup Qualification season), potentially "basket" competitions could work.

The problem with this, is it would be hard for teams to move between baskets in the off-season, as can happen now.

An idea like the Mini-World cup could work. Would probably be best to split the non WC qualified teams in to two different mini world cups, to keep some similar competition happening.

possibly some "B World cup" for teams who did not qualify?
2020-05-19 14:36:44
Yeah a B and C would probably work, with teams finishing 3rd and 4th going to the B world cup, and 5th,6th,7th going to the C world cup.

I do kind of hope someone can come up with something a little more exciting though :D, but it's all I have at present.

Even a promote/relegate league system could be good idea

1) Yes please take care of the Continental competition i can give you history of champions for not official euro cups we had u27 maybe still make sense
2) maybe another NT with different age u23 or u24?

3) limit calendar for 1 game per week as it is now ...
to be able to provide you any solutions we need to know the length of the season so far that is not possible and will be usless...

for continental competitions there could be playoffs before world cup or even during wc for those that do not playe there

B and C world cups do not make sense there is one world cup and should be like this i think current NT structure is ok

Maybe it's enough with enabling the schedule of friendly leagues for NTs the same way as for clubs, and also making possible to specify a U27 or whatever rule for those leagues or individual friendly matches

Problem with continental competition at the NT level is, you already know who is likely to win (or which one of 2 teams will), because there isn't variation (with the exception of the UEFA group). This is why I suggested it is not a good idea at NT level but rather the club level (and if it gets put in at NT level, it will not get put in at club level).

At club level it is a good idea, because even if a nation is weak, they could have one or two strong teams who could still take it out. There is more competition for the title, and more variability with who could win.

At NT level:

North/Central America: There are 12 places between the 1st and 2nd best teams
Asia/oceania: There are 14 places between the 1st and 2nd best teams
Africa: There are 10 places between the 1st and 2nd best teams

Whilst not insurmountable, this is the gap between just 1st and second, there will be a lot of dead matches outside of Europe and maybe South America.

EDIT: I just want to make it clear, that whilst I'm not completely against the idea, despite what I have shown, but I am fully aware that if it gets implemented for NTs, then it is very unlikely it will be for clubs, as it will be said "we already have a continental cup". And the Club continental cup, would be much more interesting, varied, create more talk and more relationships than an NT one would

I think having "rules" that can be applied would be a good idea.

We should be able to create our own leagues, that have an auto-draw, just like current friendly leagues - at a minimum.

If we can then apply rules (just basic ones, like age limits) then that would be good too. This would give NT coaches the opportunity to form whatever competition they would like, and would also reduce the need to be looking up/arranging a match every week.

And if they want, they can have their own continental friendly league. Or a "basket" friendly league. Or a user number friendly league

1) World Cup - keeping the format of the final phase as it is perhaps redefining the qualifying groups by continent (obviously with places for the final phase divided proportionally to the number of teams per continent)

2) Make the competitions that survive today official thanks to the commitment of single managers such as:
European championship
America's Cup
Africa Cup
Asian cup
The latter two could come together in one tournament to make it more competitive!

3) Officialize the tournaments for teams eliminated from the world championship such as the Mini World Cup

I'd vote for one of those.

When players finish with U21, age 20 or 21, depending on season (WCQ vs WC) they miss a lot of games until they are good enough to play for NT. Having one of those competitions will allow NT managers to follow players' development, have more fun, motivate managers to train them etc.

here is a lot of information about NT and U21:

and more information about reform NT competitions:

maybe the idea:

Saison A: Continental cups -> the best teams of a continent are automatically qualified for the WC, the other for the "Consolation Lap Trophy"

Saison B: WC-Cup and Consolation Lap Trophy
