He will never be " just a defender". With a price of 3,5 M + you will never make profit the first season. At 20-21 he will go with a nice profit I presume. So longterm it's okay, for shortsale it's robbed.

It would be more profitable to train subskills now next season. He has 28 midskillpoints and will have almost 40 with a season Tech/Pm/passing. Then he will get maybe 4,5-5M? Presuming the talent is very nice too. pacetraining won't get the investment back the first year imo...
