Heyo, I'm just coming back to the game after what seems way, way too long. About 10 years.
I'm happy to see it recieved some love and recently some deep changes when it comes to how the game is played. League size, training... And I have to say, I'm a bit overwhelmed. Is there anywhere I can find an updated guide? I love when it goes really in deep on the mechanics so, not afraid to get myself into a lengthy read.
I hope I can get the hang of it quickly. :)

Glad to see you back!
You could read the dev diaries on the news pages, but those are not really helpful to extract all the best information out of.
Because they sometimes announced news and than they went back on some decisions.
Biggest change in the system up until now is the training change.
Basically, now you have more options on what you want to train.
Now you have 3 types of training.
There's general training, formation training and advanced training. In the past there was only general training and "advanced training" for the 1 and only order you've selected, for this order you had to choose 1 skill. Before it was possible to train each skill on each order, but reduced effectiveness of you trained striker skill with DEF order and so on
Now each order has 1 specific skill, this skill is only possible to be trained on that specific order.
- GK order can train all the skills on the left side + keeper skill
- DEF order can train all the skills on the left side + defender skill
- MID order can train all the skills on the left side + playmaker skill
- ATT order can train all the skills on the left side + striker skill
"All skills on the left side" are: Stamina, pace, technique and passing.
Different trainings explained below are all influenced by the effectiveness of your trainers.
This means, if your head coach is unearthly on all skills AND you have 3 unearthly coaches, you are able to reach maximum effectiveness for each of the trainings.
All different types of trainings and their effectiveness are also dependant on how many minutes they played and what type of match they played.
At the moment the effectiveness of competition matches is the greatest and the effectiveness of NT matches is the smallest, Friendly games are less effective than competition or cup games.
I say at the moment, because they are planning to increase the effectiveness of competitive NT games to that of a regular competition or cup game. Friendly NT games will have 0 effectiveness.
General training
General training is a small bonus that a player gets on each skill if he played minutes in the past week. Also depending on the type of game.
It has the biggest effect on stamina.
If your coach has unearthly stamina, than you might see your player pop on stamina, every 7 to 9 weeks or so (my personal experience)
Formation training
Formation training allows you to give a "small boost" on the skill that has been selected for each order and to the players who are not selected for the advanced training. For example: GK order trains keeper
Usually these players in formation training are not your trainees, but these are players you need to complete your team, as there are only 10 spots in the advanced training. In my team, players that receive the formation training are older players (almost an untrainable age).
There are different factors that have an influence on the effectiveness of formation training.
These factors are the following
- Main coach level
- Minutes played (and the game type NT game < friendly game < competition or cup game)
- if you have selected the right order for your player. If the player used an ATT order during the games in the past week, you have to select the ATT order on the training page on the little drop down menu. Same goes for all other orders.
It's said, that if a player in formation training reaches 100% formation training it would be around 20% effectiveness of a 100% advanced training. (This means it's 5 times less effective than advanced training)
For example: if your player, in advanced training, would need 3 weeks to pop from adequate(6) pace to good(7) pace. In theory, that same player, in formation training, would need 15 weeks to pop from adequate to good pace.
So as you see, it's pointless to waste good players with potential in the formation training.
Advanced training
The only training that really matters!! Basically the same as the old training.
You have 10 available spots.
You can choose for each order what skill needs to be trained.
Before you were only able to train 1 order (except for pace and stamina, which trained all the orders, this is no longer the case)
If your player has been selected for advanced training and he plays 0 minutes, he will receive 50% of training
If a player plays 1 full friendly game he will receive 85% training.
1 full competitive game = 97%
1 friendly + 1 competitive = 99%
2 competitive games = 100%
In case of injury > 7 days, 0% training

Huge thanks! This really helps me to understand a bit more around the training changes. Now time to experiment a bit.
Everywhere I read, it says that anything below 'unearthly' for coaches is not enough, does that still remain true?

Your head coach should be unearthly at all skills you want to train. Other skills do not have to be unearthly but should be high enough for general training. Assistants should be +- at least outstanding for new yours
Is there any relationship between junior skill level and talent?
Ex. If a youth comes out magical (15) does this mean he will have good talent / pop quickly? Or the junior still could be slow with pops?
And vice versa...ex. solid (8) youth could still have good talent.

No, it's not related.
Of course if a junior comes out as magical or higher you can asume he has at least good talent because he had to get to that level in the first place.

How does stamina training work with this new training system? I forgot to put my trainees to play in friendly match friday and they will get only 50% training efficiency in advanced training this week. If I choose stamina for all orders, is it now in same line with other skills, that training efficiency determines the efficiency of stamina training or will stamina training be as efficient despite what the training efficiecy is for players in advanced training?
I would suggest to not train stamina. Stamina training is not "random" with general training anymore. Instead it steadily increases with general training and you can expect pop every 7-9 weeks for your players and they will reach max (11) stamina in some seasons anyway. Before there were random drops in stamina but that part is gone since the reform.
Provided you have a head coach with unearthly on stamina and 3 decent assistants...
Can anybody confirm that the rule of dismissing the match against the bottom teams is in place for "6 teams groups" to calculate which teams classify to the World Cup?
no, the rule isn't active. France, Uruguay, Israel and Ireland still aren't safe in WC if Belgie wins against Germany. So you have to win on Saturday.
edit: a draw would be enough for Uruguay
