Heehee. The 3rd place team from Group H is playing for pride. Only the top 6 3rd place teams advance.

Macedonia is still mathematically alive, but only mathematically (they would need to win their remaining two matches, and most of the teams listed above would have to go pointless).

They could easily fix it with a playoff including the top 12 but not going to happen is it.

the problem of mexico is that in group D he has the last match with argentina, and also colombia could finish 3rd in the grupo because we have in the last two games matches against Australia(that is a very good team and has some chances to get in the WC) and Argentina, that for me is the best team in this group.

What do you think of Group D? for me is one of the hardest.

Player ratings must be taken with a grain of salt, but are a decent indicator of strength. On page 12 of this thread I calculated the average ratings of all the groups (at that point). Group D had the second strongest rating (behind the group with Poland and just ahead of Canada's group). Clearly it is one of the most difficult groups.

And not without some random wackiness of it's own. Australia's draw against Bulgaria was brutal. I haven't watched all Mexico's matches, but they aren't getting results to match the game stats. Tho no-one there has been bent over to quite the same extent as Canada.

It should be very intersting. Game times the final week could well influence tactics in several groups.

Sweden is fighting for one of the 6 places as the best 3rd place. Here is a list of the 3rd place teams right now:

Probably already there:
B Uruguay 15 +38 (Chile - Uruguay, Uruguay - Indonesia)
D México 16 +19 (México - Bulgaria, Argentina -México)
F Portugal 16 +37 (Nederland - Portugal, Portugal - Latvija)
K New Zealand 16 +15 (Italia - New Zealand, New Zealand - Türkiye)

Maybe:
M Canada 15 +21 (Canada - Hellas, Lietuva - Canada)
I Sverige 15 +15 (Sverige - Zhōngguó, Ireland - Sverige)
J Perú 15 +15 (Eesti - Perú, Perú - Guatemala)
G Belarus 15 +11 (España - Belarus, Belarus - Moldova)
E Venezuela 15 +10 (Schweiz - Venezuela, Venezuela - Hong Kong)
C Slovenija 15 +7 (Slovenija - Shqipëria, Singapore - Slovenija)

Already out?:
A Cymru 12 +8 (Cymru - Paraguay, Al Maghrib - Cymru)
H Makedonija 10 -24 (Malta- Makedonija, Costa Rica - Makedonija)
L Srbja 12 -14 (Polska - Srbija, Srbija - South Africa)

I know that some groups are very though so a few of these teams will probably take 2nd place of their groups or maybe even 1st place...

I'd suggest Slovenija should be in the "Probably already there" group, as they have two really easy matches to go. Everyone else has at least one difficult game.

Sweden probably has the next easiest fixtures (IMO), so also has the inside track. :)

I think Canada, Sverige and Slovenija have more chance going through than Portugal has. I'm quite sure the Netherlands will beat Portugal and that Canada, Sverige and Slovenija have quite good chances beating both opponents. For Portugal to go out it's not even necessary that all three teams win both matches.

Looking at those standings i'd say it'll finish

Slovenija 21
Mexico 19
Portugal 19
Uruguay 18 points
Canada 18
Sweden 18
Peru 18
Belarus 18
Venezuela 18
Wales 18
New Zealand 17
Serbia 15
Makedonija 13

6 teams on the same points go to goal difference. Uruguay will take one spot, the others are too close to guess.

Interesting. :)

I would be surprised if Sweden didn't muster at least a draw against Ireland. And though Turkey is a solid opponent, I think they missed their chance in the first New Zealand meeting.

I suspect only 1 ... maybe 2 teams on 18 points will advance.

Great analyze everyone. =)

in group c, scotland will probably lose to England and will finish 3rd with 19 points, and Slovenija wil fnish 2nd with 21 points
2008-01-17 17:33:43
Good point. :) Mexico could well reel-in Colombia too (who has two tough games yet). A few other teams (like Canada) also have an outside shot of finishing 2nd.

19 points looks pretty safe. 18 very iffy.
