Subject: Is European Union good or bad thing?
OK, if you say so, it mens that we are established one more agreement in our little disagreement. I repeat that our polemics it is just a simple discussion between two European people. It has no sense to degenerate this into a fight, my friend.
P.S. the humor part depends of each person understanding. ( L'humore , depend de chaque gens comprehension)

I have wanted make difference between European and non-european opinions about EU. I think it should be useful.
Definitely, it's not about the level of academies, but about the attendees and the average level of education of the workforce.
I'm not saying you're wrong but you seem to forget that there is a standard deviation too. Belgium might as well be above the Czech republic. But actually I don't give a damn :-)
Point taken. But it wasnt about "Hell, we are better than you".
I'm against EU since country like Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland... came to be part of it. You cannot compare the economy of country like Germany, UK, France with the economy of those countries.
The only reason why those country are in EU is because their government is easily corruptable and because their vote count like any other country.
Any time that there is an important decision to be taken (see the project of law "against the capital punishment" in all the world), country such Poland and Latvia are easily corrupted by US government, and for their fault those projects cannot go on.
At the beginning EU was credible, while now is completely unreliable.
I remember that Italy, Spain, Greece... did a great efforce to join the EU at the beginning, people paid lot of tax and now we see that there was no reason to do such efforts since those other countries are now in EU.
EU at the moment is good only for one thing: the Euro currency is strong, much stronger than the dollar and will give us the chance to compete against US in the world economy. And I also like to be in EU because I can travel many countries without a Visa, but we cannot allow all the European countries to enter in EU!

I think people in France, Germany and UK thought the same when Spain, Italy and consor joined...
you have to give it time, Italy and Spain are two very nice countries these days..

Italy was a founder of EU (called EC) in 1956, like Germany, Belgium, Netherland, Louxembourg and France...The foundation act was in Rome ...

Yes, Europe pulled the news countries to a higher level. But I think the problem is that they took too many countries at one time. 10 a couple of years ago, and 2 last year.
These countries have much poorer economies but also we all have faster growing GDP than old countries (except Malta, but they are nearly level of GDP per capita Portugal and small as Cyprus which is also now stronger than some old members). Countries like Estonia, Czech Republic, Slovakia or Slovenia have chance to reach level of poorest old members relatively soon, Slovenia and Czech Republic already reached level of Portugal.
I dont understand what is below, well you dont like different opinion of new members or think that US influence is too strong in new members goverments, I am not sure...
The Euro currency is another pain because if we will apply Euro we would lose control on national monetary policy which should cause major problems with economy. Countries like Greece or Portugal are risking that they will have similiar problems as countries which applied fixed rate to dollar and in some major crisis they will end like Argentina.

the problem is not too many countries but the organisation of competences and powers: too many power to commission and country governements, too less to euro parliament..
..imho..
..imho..
why? if you give to an organism some power on your life better that decisions are transparent (I don't want to give EU more power: I want to control it better, according one head one vote principle, otherwise 60 millions people count like one..)
Because I simply havent voted for example Italian euro-representation. They should have oppose interests which I share.

I was not born yet, but Italy was together with the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) and with Germany and France one of the six founders of the European Community of Coals and Steel and I can't imagine that Italy had to pay that much for it.
otherwise 60 millions people count like one..
Exactly what I mean!
Latvia: 2 millions people
Lithuania: 3 millions p.
Malta: 400k p.
Italy: 60 millions
Germany: 80 millions
France: 65 millions
Do you think that is right to have 1 EU authority for those big country as well for the small countries? Come on...big countries rapresent millions and millions of people and we have to do what 2 millions people from a small country decide... that's unbelievable!...
