my favorite characters
1. Desmond - Not only interesting past, accent and lovestory but also seems to have strange abilities (I loved that episodes "the constant" where he switched between the times and also the final episode of Season 3 and how he tried to save Charlie till the end), the actor is only one that really is able to act in Lost :P
2. Kate - Well, she is pretty to look at. She is the main character and was planned to be. I guess how she has to chose between Jack and Sawyer symbolyses the fight between light and dark and I expect that somehow she will make the decision that will decide the fight between the two at the end of season 6.
3. Hurley - I like to see him and his energy (like the story with the car or the golf course), I would have loved to have him in more serious emotions, he has reason for it (Libby, how he killed everyone around him by using the numbers). But maybe the actor isn't able to play it real?
4. John (but well I doubt he is still in there..) Still he is an impressivly constructed character. I hope he will be able to come back somehow ;)
5. Daniel - well he is dead. Still I liked him and think he could have borught a lot of light into the darkness with his knowledge and understanding. But of course he never did directly share what he knew, would have been to easy, right? :P
....
last one. Ben - I hate him, I hate how he looks, how he behaves, I hate every scene where he is visible or his voice appears. DIE already, will you!???! :P

Any chance that Vincent is also the smoke monster? He has a habit of helping the islanders out and how the hell would a dog survive a plane crash anyway?
I am sure that smoke moster can trasform to everything.
that explains a lot....
that explains a lot....
The real question to me is: do they have an overall plot that answers every detail, or do they just make it up as they go along and try to create meaning retrospectively?
It's pretty clear that they've known what they're doing from the beginning. Anything that doesn't get answered now is because of that damn writers strike that screwed up Season 3 and 4.
Well I think it is both. Many things get made up along the way. Afaik "important" roles like the one of Ben and Desmond were meant to be a lot shorter, roles of others were usually meant to be in the show longer: like Charlie or Lizzy, so that leaves no choice but to made up a lot along the way. But of course the framework of the story was made in the beginning.
