Any book by Conn Iggulden, anyone interested in history should read them all.
Ah...by the way, if you're in a library and spot A question of honor by Olson/Cloud and you like history at least a bit...please read it :) It's about the story of Polish fighter pilots in 2nd WW, mainly during the Battle of Britain. It's quite a tragic story...they were one of the best, if not the best, squadron of whole RAF, they had the best kill/die ratio. Real heroes at times, invited to parties etc...forsaken after the war, told to leave the Britain to communist Poland, betrayed by USA and GB[mostly USA...], left alone in the wind...
the best part is that British government FORBADE them to take part in the Victory Parade...imagine fighting for a country that isn't even yours, risking your life in duels against German pilots...and then...

They didn't do it for britain though, they did it for the Polish family and friends back home. But that's another discussion ;)
Well yeah, you can say that they were doing it for the freedom of Poland, because they hoped[and it was promised by Churchill...] that after the Allied victory, Poland will be free again. Well, the Allies showed their traiterous face again and threw Poland into open arms of Stalin...
As far as I'm aware the deal was made early on between the Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin of how Europe would be carved up once the Germans were dealt with. At that point the Allies were really in no position to argue with Russia so they compromised in order to stop further Soviet landgrabs. They could either hand over Poland or have it taken, the end result is the same.

The deal between Polish Government on Exile and Churchill was made before Russia changed their side of the war as far as I remember :) Churchill even said: "We fight together, and we shall win or die together". Well, Britain went on living and Poland got murdered.
And no, Poland could've been left alone. Why not organise REAL voting for the new government? It really wasn't hard to do.

Well yes exactly, Churchill said that and then the Russians came along and said "Actually mate, I think we'll be taking that country." The borders were drawn up, I think in 43, in order to stop the Russians running rampant and claiming everything they could. If the Allies don't hand over Poland, the Russians would simply have taken it. You might not like it but it was a logical choice.
Then I'd prefer the Allies to take over Poland. Anything else than Russians would've been great. It's not really nice to give Your allies territory to the country whose soldiers used to rape Polish women and kill civilians...
They didn't do it for britain though, they did it for the Polish family and friends back home.
They were stopping an invasion to UK. And, as far as I know, no UK armed force took part in driving the Germans out of Poland. So, at most, you can say they were doing it for the (unfulfilled) promise of, some day, be helped to do something for the family and friends back home :P

That's way past the Battle of Britain, isn't it? :P

i'd love the discussion, but again, this is not the appropraite topic :)
Ok, back on topic. ;-)
Fav Book: 1984 by George Orwell
Reading now: A Shadow You Soon Will Be by Osvaldo Soriano
Regarding the novel "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" which someone recommended a few posts above, in my opinion the beauty of its narration lies in the great use of the Spanish language and I'm afraid that part of that beauty might get lost in translation. :-S
