2008-07-08 20:17:49
:D
2008-07-08 20:25:23
Crazy like a fox
2008-07-08 20:28:27
That's bull. On clay, strength is very important...
2008-07-08 21:19:44
Yeah Right :D

Clay is where good rounded tennisman shines...
it's the hardest surface to master because it asks to be good in various skills where other surfaces hide this lack of skills...
I'm not saying Federer is crap but in my eyes he's n2 behind Nadal, especially after Nadal won Wimbledon...

Though volleying isn't needed at all.

It's part of the criticism of Wimbledon now, is that it allows base liners to win, it was supposed to allow other types to win.

volleying seems to be something of the past these days...
certainly something to do with how strong the players are these days power and muscle wise compare the old days..

problem with volleying is that racquet making technology is far better than it was 10-15years ago thus enabling players to hit balls under angles that were impossible before

clay as a surface is the slowest and so enables the players that maybe aren't the best at playing tennis to get close to good players if they have good stamina and speed.
if u combine player that is above average level of hitting the ball with stamina like bull and great speed u get unbeatable rafa nadal on clay.
the thing some people don't know is that central ground on rolland garros is the slowes of all there so rafa gets even more bonuses there

on the other hand u have fast surfaces. on those surfaces one needs to have good hitting of the ball, and serve is much more important there. speed is not as important as on clay as a decent ball hit in the corner is very hard to catch.
in the past few years grass on wimbledon is getting slower and slower (have really no idea why are they doing this) + rafa is getting better (just look at his left arm ffs) and u get how come rafa lost in 5 sets last year and won this year

overall for me federer is still better player (in term of his achievements), but at the moment rafa is definitely playing better tennis than him.

the talk how sampras was no good as he couldn't play on clay are nonsense, he is probably one of the best ever.
of all i have seen federer is the best there was, he needs just couple more grandslams to make it official.

rafa should try working on his serve as that is the aspect of the game he is no better than some female tennis players (tbh williams sisters and ana ivanovic have better serve than he does) + he is still young and if he keeps up training hard as he is now + having such a tight schedule i don't know how his body will take all that.

both of these players are great and i think we (people that like tennis) are lucky to have such 2 great sportsman at the same time as most of their matches are real tennis spectacles

It certainly is a totally different game now...didn't Tim Henman serve and volley 90%+ on his first serve? I don't think any modern player serves and volleys quite as much as that at Wimbledon.
2008-07-09 14:10:14
Sure, the reason is that it's much much slower than years ago (surface + balls), therefore serve and volley isn't the best strategy anymore.

I always liked Wimbledon because you saw a totally different style of playing tennis there, but at the moment it's the same as on the other surfaces ...

good old stefan edbergs serve volley style [cool]
2009-09-10 09:02:37
federer =)
2009-09-10 11:02:36
Fede(rer) le Grand :D
2009-09-10 11:32:38
imo nadal isnt going to last as long as federer, especially with that knee injury. you can't really expect nadal to be still playing the same high tempo game he's playing 5-6 years from now, would you?
