Indeed football doesn't directly need to be "sponsored" by government. But can you explain me why the Belgium national competition is so bad? I mean I saw a Belgian team losing over a laughable team somewhere in East Europe. With all due respect.

But what can be sponsored is amateur sport clubs, getting good trainers for the sportsmen and women, getting good schools where young trainers can get their education and become a top coach. And I might be wrong but I don't think that's happening in Belgium and that's the missing link between 1 or 2 medals and the amount of medals the Netherlands get each edition.

"Determing what problem? That our defense isn't good. Yeah, money will fix this right away! "

It can fix things, as said in my reaction to langhe...

I wonder why sports should be a priority for a government to sponsor. There are so much things better to sponsor than football…

Not only football! I mean sports as a whole. On amateur basis and on professional basis it's important to have a government who is willing to spend money. I mean for an amateur it would be nice if there are enough tennis parks if you're a tennis player, enough place to play football safely. ( See, aissati,Affelay, they are from the street and if there is nowhere to practice, then you have less possibilities to scout talent) And if the government invest in better sporting facilities in schools then it's easier to see someone with potential, who might turn out to be a candidate for the medals. ( there are money more investments to come up with :))

Read this topic (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=691198) because whether you would like to deny it or not or say I am wrong, there is a problem in the Belgium sports, and remember I don't say Belgium sports is a laugh instead I say things could be changed. Because what is better than seriously competing with the Belgians? :)

And your questions why should a government sponsor sports... well it's better if as much people as possible attend sports... ( Yeah, you're allowed to say: look who says that... I dont mind cos youre right should u say that ;P) its healthy... ;) I mean you dont have to be a potential professional, but it doesnt mean the government can refrain from investing... ;)

You want to see a problem in sport? Then get interested in Poland. I don't think you will find a country with worse sport background.

Problem in Belgian sports? What about our cyclists, motorists, what about Tia Hellebaut, Kim Gevaert, Justine Henin, what about fourth place in The Olympics? We still are a small country, and our achievements in sports remain good for a country of our size.

:| the players are very lazy.Except the goalkeeper(Lobont) I can say they were sleeping. And we have a tactic totally wrong. We played with Contra(which is DR)at middle and with Daniel Niculae at middle too(which is a striker). And we made alot of mistakes in defence.Letuvia administrated us a great lesson about football, all the respect for them.
Anyway there were some surprising scores.

borkos i'm old, but many many years ago my best team for football was Nederland (just some names
van de Kerkhof - Hovenkamp - van de Korput -van de Kerkhof - Schrijvers - Rensenbrink - Krol - Cruijff)
and Poland (Lato - Deyna - Żmuda - tomacescky and so on) at that time poland was very strong team, what's happened after?

Hm..I guess that '70-'80 were the golden years when money was not so important. You see, Poland was under Russian reign, there was no democracy up here. It made our economy suffer, we are just about to start the European level of life, but still our wages are lower than in Italy, or Great Britain.

That had some influence on our footie. In '74 etc. it was mainly talent that determined who wins the World Cup :) and luck of course ;). But later on there came better stadiums, football specialists in medicine, in training, in how to train a young[10-12yo] guy. There were researches etc. In Poland there was no money for it. In Spain, Italy, Argentina there is great scouting of very young guys. There are special training centers. Specialist coaches. In Poland it's much worse.

I think that's the main reason. Italians, Spaniards have same talents as we have in Poland, or Srbija has, or every country on the world. The thing that makes the difference is the scouting and training at youngest years. You use the full potential of the players, we don't.
