Why positive?
The place where you are born is random, how can i be proud of that?

I would sell my country for a cookie... XD

ugh guys... it's sad.
you don't choose your mother too, so you won't love her?

your mother loves you and look after, does any piece of soil do something similar???
2009-05-15 18:47:32
if you treat your country just like a 'piece of soil', it doesn't.

but i think patriotism isn't only love for 'piece of soil', for hm... physical meaning of land, but love for country as your motherland.
how this word is built isn't meaningless...

patriotism = positive ...because it is simply being proud of something/somewhere, traditions, you can be proud and positive about any random event (like your birthday, a goal scored by your favorite player), without harm to anyone... -therefore "positive"... You can be simply proud of being "a part of something" (belonging) like a football team in which you only participate by "being there" ...just like only being/living in a borough/country. If you are patriotic, you highlight the positive aspects of your town for example {like these pictures}, that does NOT mean you hate everywhere else... thats:

nationalizm, lokalizm = is similar to patriotism but often (wrongly) mixed up, nationalizm crosses a important line which makes it negative, line of believing that your country is the most important thing in the world, that it is best... because the rest is worse... thats pure crap, as 'normal' plp would know. Chauvinism, Fascism are extremes on the negative side of the spectrum, the 'dark'side ;-P....
