Yes, it is a problem. But I can tell you that we don't have more problems with violence here as we have in other big cities from Brazil like São Paulo, Recife and Fortaleza. It is in the same level.
The diference in Rio is that we don't have a poor area apart from the rest of the city, like São Paulo - they call it "periferia". Here the poor areas are called "favelas" and we have it all over the city, even in the rich areas.
This city has so many problems, like any other big city in the world. On the other hand, we have so many good things too, like these pictures can show.
It's just a matter of choice. What is more important for you? The violence - that is a problem, but exists in any other big city - or the beauties - that are incomparable in Rio?
