I said a world leader, not leader of the world.
Don't be so bitter guac, not everyone is able to understand what a native means...:) for most people world leader = leader of the world. :)

For most people it isn't:P
We in Europe, and probably in other parts of the world, people are talking about that the United States made such a big step to elect a black president, but from what I've been told I believe that it isn't such a big issue in the United States itself. People talking that Americans are racist are talking nonsense as we're all talking about how a big step it is that a black person became the most important man in the most powerful country of the world while Americans just voted for him.

Well I think that there are some states which or more racist than others...but that's all. There so many non-white people in USA that it's impossible for the States to be racist. I mean, what's the biggest cause of racism? Lack of knowledge about other people, no relations with them, no eye to eye contact. Of course there are some people with dumb idelogy etc. but those people are everywhere.
What I don't like, excuse me for a little off topic, is the fact that many for example black people take advantage of their skin colour. If something doesn't go as they wished for, thay start saying "oh that's racism". "Oh, this guy is racist". And it doesn't go the other way round. Has everyone ever heard about a black man being a racist? What I mean is when a black girl gets raped by a white man the tabloids will write "A racist raped a black girl!" and the article will be mainly connected with racism. If a white women gets raped by a black man it'll just be "A white girl raped by a black man" or even "Another raped girl". We should stop talking so much about racism, it's ages since it was really so hm...visible? It's not such a problem nowadays in my opinion.

Your statement is wrong. Take a look at my Natalee Holloway topic which I created in a sarcastic mood. Everyone made a lot of fuzz of a missing white girl while there are lots of missing black girls.

Well there are also lots of lost men and no one says about it, so? :)
I'm just saying that current situation is not normal. When you approach a black man or women you often think "ok, should I/how to say it? will he/she feel offended? I think it's not normal, this is exactly what is kinda making the difference. You are not always sincere with people of other skin colour because you might be accused or be seen as a racist.

A fact is that we still tend to unintentionally treat black people differently. I have never experienced the situation you described. I would think it really isn't a big problem if you just treat those people normal.
It's the same with gay people. A very good friend of mine is gay and I never make gay jokes unless he's starting, but I would be 100% sure that he wouldn't mind if I would do so, as long as I'm not making fun of him, gay people, black people, etc.

the fact is, there still are differences everywhere.
I have a minority religion; i still feel different than others, and have time and time again been treated differently or been present when others said things against my religion.
And you can't tell my religion when you look at me.
freakishly enough, i think it was michael irving who had a great conversation i heard today on the radio. He talked about how horrified he was at black people celebrating when OJ got off, because "they needed to feel like they won SOMETHING". Compare that with 10 years later when they can celebrate this, and THAT can make me proud of the way i voted yesterday.
p.s. the "freakishly" part of the comment was freakish that it was coming from michael irving who i cant stand (COWBOYS SUCK, GO GO GO EAGLES) and never thought of as an intelligent person. So please don't say i was calling anything else was freakish etc.

actually just yesterday i voted against spending 400 million dollars on extra spending on the water and sewer system for Pennsylvania.
Isn't that a problem in America? I read in a leading american geographic book that water and sewer systems in America are often badly maintained.

how do you expect that every voter has enough knowledgde about finances and sewer systems that they can give a grounded vote on that matter? It's not the ideal system either.
one guy states how his country is better than the usa because they can provide input into votes besides just voting for a person
another says that people shouldn't be able to vote since they don't know enough.
Lol.

there's a third...
in the us, you can only choose between two very similar choises for a president. So the general direction your country is going, is always going to be the same (except for this election, maybe). You counter this by saying you can also vote directly on some specific important issues. How do you see both comments as contradictory?
Here, you can choose between a number of fairly destinctive (now less destinctive than they used to) political parties. I still think that voting on issues like 'do you want to spend 400 million on a new sewer' is not the best way to play out your democracy.
We had the same problem with the EU constitution. Some countries called their people for a referendum. In Ireland, who gets a lot of funds from the EU, called against more influence from the EU, although they actually get the most benefit out of it. This is an example that holding a referendum about complex issues is not always a good idea.
But the Irish have several political parties, with destinctive opinions, so in an election the Irish can vote to send a Europe-loving party to government. So there they have more input than the average american in their government.

okay, i now know Obama is in charge and i also know how a large percentage of voters feel about it, can we stop hearing about it now :@
world leader? lol
I said a world leader, not leader of the world.
Or do you not think that the USA is influential in the world? I'd consider a lot of the leaders of various countries (leaders of the NATO countries to start, but certainly would be others) as world leaders.
But of course you jump to conclusions and think that i was saying that america was the most important country in the world?
First you said that you were the leaders of the world
Now you say that you are the leaders of the whole American continent
Whats next? Just Mexico and Canada?? xD lol

leader of the world = 1 person. world leader = one of the presidents etc.
