Subject: United States: Election Time

2008-11-06 21:09:04
leader of the world = 1 person. world leader = one of the presidents etc.

Another interpretation mistake?
America=USA.

I don't know what you call it, but here in the Netherlands we call it either the US, or America.
Like Nederland. You can call it the Netherlands, but also Holland.

He's joking about how anglo speakers use the term America to refer to USA, and american to refer to USA's citizens. Cause bottom line is that America is the whole continent, from Canada to Argentina, and we all are americans as we are born in America.

But don't go off topic.

That's right!! ;)

How would you call an inhabitant of the United States in one single world without using 'American'.

It's just like American natives are wrongly called Indians, the Netherlands is wrongly called Holland, the United Kingdom is wrongly called Great-Brittain or England, like Inuits are wrongly called Eskimo, like people with the syndrom of Down are wrongly called mongols, like the colonisers of England are wrongly called Anglo-Saxons, like the first written sentence in Dutch is wrongly called Dutch while it's actually Old-English, etc. It's a long litany of things that at some point have been called wrongly or are still called wrongly.

A US citizen?
2008-11-07 00:05:59
Those are two words.
2008-11-07 00:07:47
exactly
2008-11-07 00:10:46
Oh well... would it be a problem to use the space button?

in the us, you can only choose between two very similar choises for a president.

Actually there were four main candidates on the ballot i filled out. Dunno about which ballot you completed last time you voted in a USA presidential election :)

i call the inhabitants of the UK "brits" personally. works for me.
2008-11-07 00:30:07
Are you including Irish people in that? (North and/or South).

No, but my point is that for a lot of people 'American' is a lot more convenient to say because it's only one single word.

Yank, Yankee, Yankeeland
2008-11-07 09:38:08
I used to call them Bushes.
Now they are all Obamas.

Much better than McCains (sounds like a fast food chain) btw
;)

De facto you only have two choices mostly due to the voting system. In Britain they've a similar system in which the Liberal Democrats have succeeded in achieving some seats in the parliament, but still lacks a representation proportional to popular vote.
