Subject: Travel topic

2008-12-02 23:34:08
I don't know whether a similar topic has ever existed, but as the need came I felt like starting it.

This topic may be very useful for anyone who plans to travel and wants to ask about e.g. some tips, prices, what option is better to choose or even write that "I'm going to Finland trough Stockholm. Would anyone be able to help me get form the airport to the port?" etc. etc.

No spam allowed here.

Just to start with something:

Does anyone know the approximate cost of a ferry ticket form Stockholm to Turku (Finland). I've been browsing and browsing the Net, but I couldn't see any prices... Has anyone traveled this way? I don't want any links to any websites.

Thanks.

Depends on date, time, if you're traveling with car, if you need a cabin (and what kind of cabin) etc., so it's hard to give you an approximate number. The cheapest going in the day according to Tallink/Silja Line is 95 SEK and in the night is 145 SEK.

I don't understand Swedish perfectly (let alone Danish), but, if I am not wrong, on 29th January - day option - I'd pay 110 SEK for Däckplats. Would it be everything or are there any other fees and so on? Thanks!

It seem like that - that's at least the price I come up with when I search for a reservation with your specific info. I can't find anything indicating that there will be any fees, so it seem like 110 SEK is the actual price.

If you have a budget of around €600 to go on holiday when you're 18

Where would you go?
I'm not the type to lay 2 weeks at a pool or at the beach
I want to do something, quaddriving, canyoning,..
and even visit a cultural thing.

When I was around that age I went with around Europe with trains and busses. Which is still pretty cheap. You need to know some languages though. In every bigger city are pretty cheap hostels where you always meet a lot of ppl your age from different countries.

I liked Prague, the Toscana, southern part of France (it's for example actually very cheap to do camping right next to the sea there).

By Eurolines or something you can easily travel quite far for a low price.

You can also go to the international sokker meeting ;)

I can recommend visiting the Middle East; it's cheap, it has loads of great cultural sights and the people are extremely friendly. Getting there might be the expensive part, as 600 € aren't much. If you want to stay for two weeks it'd say it's next to impossible to get to a destination cheap enough as they are far away from Belgium. You best bet would be last minute offers. Otherwise you could hitch-hike. Some people sees hitching as a great experience, but personally I wouldn't recommend it and only does it if other options are far too expensive or non-existent.

Hmm if 600€ is not enough

My absolute maximum is 800-900€ (I only earn 1400 and i want to buy some new stuff)

edit: the reason why I said 600 is because i wanted to put a small amount on my bank account

When do you want to go? If you want to go in winter and be able to go swimming you need to seek quite far away while in the summer you can do that in Denmark (well if you're a real viking you don't care about the temperature) :)

For all year I can recommend Soft Beach Camp just north of Nuweiba in Egypt it is a great and cheap beach camp. For 2 €/day you can get your own hut at the beach. It also has a good restaurant. There is a couple of other beach camps and a very small village centre. It's possible to go on day trips to Mt. Sinai and St. Catherine's Monastery as well as diving if you have a certificate.
After a couple of days you can either go to Cairo (Pyramids, Egyptian Museum etc.) and then on to Aswan (Nubian Museum, Temples of Philae, Abu Simbel), take a felucca cruise up the Nile to Luxor (Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temples, Luxor Temple) and fly home from Cairo. I guess you'd be able to do that if you find a cheap flight.
Alternatively you could take the ferry from Nuweiba or the bus (via Israel) to Jordan. The visa is free as you enter Aqaba which is a free trade zone. In Jordan make sure to visit Wadi Rum (beautiful desert, the location where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed), Petra and the Dead Sea. Other places of interest in Jordan includes Amman (the citadel, the Roman ruins, the souq), Madaba (Mt. Nebo, the mosaics) and Kerak (the crusader castle).
