Infinite mercy means that in the end you'll be forgiven, no matter what you did.

hmm... it's YOUR DEFINITION of infinite mercy, or you really think infinite mercy means THIS?

I'm an alcoholist, is that also a religion? :p

religion kills more people than any war, abolish it!

That's also the first thing my mother (would have) said as she is religious. But this is not true. First of all mercy means forgiveness. That's not my definition, that's not your definition, that's the English definition. The corresponding words in Dutch mean the same. Maybe it means something different in Polish (which I doubt), but than there would be no point in this discussion.

If mercy=forgiveness;

that infinite mercy=infinite forgiveness.

And here comes the specific definition of mercy vs. forgiveness: when you're infinite merciful you'll forgive everything in the end, no matter what.

hmm... i was thinking
and hmm. you're bit right :P. it depends on what do you mean :D. because god will forgive you everything, but you have to regret doing something.

edit:
~half year ago i read in w. tatarkiewicz's book 'history of philosophy' some things about augustine's and thomas aquinas' philosophy, then talked about it with one priest (i had to prepare something to school, so... it wasn't too much, but it was really hard :P. and come on, i'm 17 :P). if you want some arguments, you can check it :).

Hmm well, this is quite a hard thing to discuss, because religion is very personal and obviously people are not used of being flexible about what other people do say about religion. Often if someone does say something not so good about religion, then people that are religious do start taking this very personal. The main problem about this seems to be that religion is a thing you cannot really dispute and discuss, you just believe or you don't.
So if you are religious, please do not read the rest of my post, because it may offend you although it is only my personal opinion.

Well I was brought up as a catholic (but well in a modern way). I still had to go in religion classes and learn some things from the old bible (where God is like a fury beast of punishment and for example in story of Moses does kill children) and also from new testament and stuff but here for example the use of condoms and sex before marriage is normal. All in all I did not like just being told what to think and especially the old testament did quite shock me. I didn't practicise as a catholic as I grew older (13 years and older) and more and more developped my own idea about how life works etc and more and more grew into "atheism". So I do not believe in God as a almighty creature and I don't believe that if a God existed he would have the same understanding of good and evil like we have (that we would be made in Gods image seems a little arrogant to me). Also I did read a lot about religious wars (does not matter if past or present) and how religion was always an excuse to kill other humans with different religious beliefs.
The reason why I did really make the step to tell the church I didn't want to be catholic was the fact, that the pope did again tell in africa that condoms still are not allowed. Thus the pope did make way for HIV and other sicknesses, making people being afraid and insecure about their own sexuality and taking away the "control" of people for having children or not. For me a religion that does make people suffer with such rules is not worth anything.

Still I see that religion is very important for humans. It not only does "force" them to be good without the need to control them (something that today with our justice is not really that important any longer, but it was very important for 2000 years), it also makes it easier for many to live their life, for example if they are in pain and dieing or if they have suffered a lot and through religion believe that they get something in return for that. Also religion does give quite easy answers on difficult questions, so you do not need to think further (for example religion always has the position that humans are better than animals and thus killing animals and eating meat is nothing bad).
So religion basically is a good thing if not abused. Still it is nothing for me :)

About the difference between religion and sects: basically a religion is something that is found often and sects mostly are religions that do not have many people believing it yet (so new religion or something). Still for me both things are the same. Of course in media sects or often attacked and of course there are new sects that really do abuse their believers. For me a sect still is a neutral word for a new and not spread religion.

Two recommendations for anyone who is interested in religion, god, sects or theology of any sort...

1. Travel - Go visit India, Japan, Bolivia and as many places as you can, and if possible attend foreign religious ceremonies. They are usually beautiful social events and broaden one's horizons.

2. Read Richard Dawkins' book called 'The God Delusion'. A superb book that will really change your view on these things, written by one of the world's foremost scholars.
