Subject: what appeared first?

2009-07-30 20:28:39
Yes it does. The answer is either chicken or egg. One of them had to have come into existence first, no? :)

What about at exactly the same time, a possibility, no? ;o)
2009-07-30 20:35:32
highly unlikely, methinks. Espeically if you consider hundreds if not thousands of decimal digits like I do, no? :P
2009-07-30 20:39:50
Pffft. Decimals, schmecimals :o) i meant save a few milliseconds, perhaps one was not caused by the other?
2009-07-30 20:44:58
perhaps one was not caused by the other?

Maybe. But that doesn't really bear any relevance to the question if the egg or the chicken was first. :P
Unless we're talking about eggs in general, and not just chickeneggs of course :p

Then it's time to broaden your definition of evolution. At least you shouldn't tell someone something isn't evolution because it doesn't fit in your limited edition.

Dog races aren't solely created by cross-breeding (you need big genetic variety to be able to cross breed).

Viruses are, indeed, no living being, but they're definitely able to evolve, at a very quick rate. I don't understand why you can't compare viruses with organisms and I don't understand what you mean to say with your virus comment since I didn't say anything about viruses.

The point was actually that evolution can be vary quick, like I showed with the eye colour example.

Just ask god. He knows the answer.
2009-07-30 20:56:54
eggs appeared first, becouse there are not only chicken's eggs.
So appeared first some egg from some dinosaurus or crocodile or something...
2009-07-30 20:58:09
Yeah, we already now that. The question is now whether chickens or chicken eggs were first.
2009-07-30 21:14:39
I did. God told me the chicken appeared first.

End thread.

Alzheimer strike? I don't understand what you mean to say with your virus comment since I didn't say anything about viruses. Check previous page :p

And evolution can be very fast and noticeable. Let me give you a example: a very deadly virus is originated somewhere on this planet and it gets spread quickly around the planet. Practically all people get infected and 99% of all people die, except for people with blue eyes.

ev·o·lu·tion (v-lshn, v-)
n.
1. A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form. See Synonyms at development.
2.
a. The process of developing.
b. Gradual development.
3. Biology
a. Change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations, as a result of natural selection acting on the genetic variation among individuals, and resulting in the development of new species.
b. The historical development of a related group of organisms; phylogeny.

4. A movement that is part of a set of ordered movements.
5. Mathematics The extraction of a root of a quantity.

So I stick with the fact that dog breeds are not evolution in my definition, which is not narrow, as were clearly talking about the biological meaning of it ;) And I exclude viruses, as they are not living species in the phylogenetic tree of life. But there you had a point about rapid evolution.

"It has already been mentioned here, but something which just could be called a chicken evolved from something which just couldn't be called a chicken."

I believe that u cannot divide evolution in time periods (at least small ones)... It just doesnt work like that... It didnt happen over one blink of an eye, it was a very long perdio of time over which some birds evolved into chickens, but if u took two birds just few generations apart u couldnt actually point out a difference... just like u call birds as dinosaurs, u could call dinosaurs as chickens, we just call them differently because evolution made them look like two separate species. Its mostly just a game of words... Just ask urself if chickens now exactly the same like they were 100years ago? definitely no, but we still call them chikens, allthough they are different...

my grand, grand, grand,... -pa was the first .forget the chicken or the egg :P

I said nothing about the evolution of viruses, but about the evolution of humans. Quoting this part means that you didn't understand my point. I really said nothing about viruses.

Evolution is not a dictionary definition, but a scientific definition. Every dictionary which says evolution is only limited to natural selection is just wrong.

From Wiktionary:

Noun

Singular
evolution

Plural
evolutions

evolution (plural evolutions)

1. (general) A gradual process of development, formation, or growth, esp. one leading to a more advanced or complex form.
2. (biology) The change in the genetic composition of a population over successive generations.
3. (mathematics) The extraction of a root from a quantity.
4. (military) One of a series of ordered movements.

The general definition (1) is the complete definition of evolution. All people who don't understand evolution don't understand this first definition.
The second definition I won't make bold is also too limited. Evolution includes also the non genetic process of the origination of first life forms, before any organisms or genes existed.

That was exactly my point. If you're ever going to point out some bird as the first chicken (which is entirely subjective, and therefore could be done by anyone), then you've reduced the problem to what you just quoted.

Whether there's any point in doing that is disputable, like you just illustrated, but the point of the chicken/egg question is not the answer, but the question itself.

Egg ofcourse :)
