Btw, buy a Strat :-)

he's already getting an epiphone SG :P

i had a strat copy once as my first electric guitar, but i fell in love with the humbucker sound after getting my SG :) heck, even my instructor had a fat strat!

I made bad experiences with cheap strat copies;-). A friend of mine had one as first guitar - he started playing it and immediately cut his fingers bleeding. Very surprised, we started looking more closely at the guitar (it was part of an extremely cheap "made in china" guitar& bundle;-) - and recognized that the edges of the scale were sharp as a razor. We had to take a rasp and planish everything. Of course not true for every strat copy - but a funny story;-).

Yes, humbucker or single coil - a fundamental decision for every guitar player:)

I have an american strat with a bridge humbucker. Plays great... (the guitar, not me :-)))) As for mexican strats, some are pretty decent. And they are around US$350

Seriously, I do have an Epiphone too, and it has a muuuuch wider neck. It depends on what you like.

@borkos - go to any store and check Gibson (Epiphone) vs Fender and see which width of the neck works better for you.

Ok :) Will do that.

btw I can't find Behringer V-AMP on the internet shops...it's always V-AMP 2, or V-AMP Pro, and they cost 150€...almost the amount of the guitar :|
2009-09-01 18:14:15
the amp IS a part of the instrument and you should expect to pay for it close to what you pay for the guitar...

buy an acoustic one :P
2009-09-01 18:47:42
Don't expect from my to spend such a big amount of cash at the beginning :p

Ok, I got carried away :-) Buy a practice amp...
2009-09-01 19:00:16
Will try to get something 'almost decent'...just to hear the sound..;)

Hmm - on Ebay I see new ones for 59 euros;-).

But you can also buy a practice amp of course (I would not recommend anything below 15W though) - most of them also have headphone-outs nowadays. The reason why I recommended you the V-AMP is the following: When you start to like playing E-guitar, you will most probably want to get a better amp/guitar. Or even you decide to join a band (no one knows;-). The practice amp tends to get totally useless then. The advantage of a device like a V-AMP is, that it still remains very useful. Since you can just record anything on your computer just with one click and it is small, it can still be used at home (even if only for recording). Or if you are short on luggage capacity for a gig, it can save your day. We also played concerts only with PODs (the better version of V-AMPs), because we just couldn't carry around 2 half stacks as usual. And despite we now have several different amps and boxes, we still use the POD for some special sounds.

I only write this because I made the experience that some things are good for the moment - and totally useless at a later stage. In our bandroom there is a 2x2 meter equipment graveyard. And it could for sure be smaller if we would have thought a bit more on the future before buying some stuff.

As a practice amp, I think you should take a LINE6 SPIDER III 15 into consideration, since it also offers great versatility and the possibility to use some effects...

thank you, it's very useful knowledge. :)
2009-09-02 13:09:50
i hope you have some musical training or knowledge, coz it would be fairly difficult to learn guitar without prior musical training. its not impossible, but it would be difficult
2009-09-02 13:11:06
Well I've trained ear for guitar sounds, has some basic[really basic :P] music lessons. Will try to learn step by step, I have all the time in the world...:)

well, as long as you know what A B C etc is, i think that makes things much easier. also the ability to have a mental image of the piano keys is really nice too :)
