Would like to hear some Ukrainean comments on this.

Heard that some provinces of the country are quarantined, hospitals are full, people wearing masks and schools suspended for 3 weeks at least? is it true?
Border with Poland will be closed?

Ukraine's president's desperate plea for help: EU, NATO, USA, Russia, Hungary, Belorus, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia please help us as soon as possible, we can not fight this infection alone, the survival of the Ukrainian nation is under danger, our people are dieing!

Fifty-three people, including a child and two pregnant women, have died of cold and flu in Ukraine, the Health Ministry said.
In all, the country’s cold and flu rate amounts to 185,000, including 9,400 cases of flu. The number of A/H1N1 flu cases is unknown.
The situation is the worst in the Lvov region, where about 70,000 people have cold and flu. The cold and flu rate is also high in the Ternopol, Ivano-Frankovsk and Chernovtsy regions.
Four doctors died of flu in Ukraine’s Ternopol and Lvov regions, Health Minister Vasily Knyazevich said at the Sunday meeting of the operative headquarters for the prevention and treatment of A/H1N1 flu.
Ukraine enacted border crossing rules because of the A/H1N1 flu outbreak, Timoshenko said.
An international delegation of experts will come to Ukraine on November 2 for helping resolve the cold and flu problem.

These are official numbers and it has spread really quickly.

in my opinion, many many people die of flu every year, it is nothing new.

the cant use the internet as its a possible way of spreading the virus :/

ireland is gone bad too - over 1000 cases now - doubled in the past 2 weeks, but in terms of deaths its low at the moment

H1N1 thing is not new yeah. But the situation in Ukraine is New I think. If the things i have heard and read are real then it looks really bad over there.

a new strain in an ordinary flu virus. Just as dangerous as a 'normal' flu virus.

It's all over the news here since Ukraine is a neighbouring country to us. I wonder how did the situation became like this. But according to the news, we're sending our vaccines there.

No, you have a better resistance to it, but since it's slightly modified you aren't totally immune.

Btw Mexican flu is H1N1 is the virus in the Ukraine. A Dutch flu site speaks of 5000 infections and 50 deaths.

And another website speaks of 40.000 infections of an unknown strain of influenza, which is not Mexican flu, in western Ukraine.

Now the winter is arriving to the north its' happening the same that happened in the Argentina and Chile(the countries that have the worse winters in the southern hemisphere). Weird, that Europe being aware of the situation(the northern hemisphere had a lot of time to prepare for the winter, not like here that the virus showed up when the winter was around the corner), didn't prepare better for this. :S

People will die, cause it's a new strain and we aren't immune to it, will take some flu seasons for human's immune system to be able to fight it better. But the virus isn't worse than the regular flu, the problem is that attacks viciusly the loans and reproduces very quickly, that could produce a pneumonia if it sin't treated on time. Plus the rate infectiousness(is very virulent) is very high, so lost of people gets infected, then more die, but the percentage of dead per infected people isn't high.

We're prepared for flu every year, but I never take flu vaccinations and every now and then I get infected, no problem.
Also, Ukraine isn't a very rich country which can hand out vaccinations to everyone.
Vaccination for the new H1N1 strain is made relatively late as it isn't as simple as the yearly influenza.
The unknown influenza strain which infected 40k Ukrainians is not Mexican flu, so even when a vaccination would be ready, it would not stop this strain from spreading.
Ukraine also doesn't have the same medical facilities western European, American and probably Latin American (as well) countries, have. This will lead to a higher dead/infectioned rate.

Just like you said, H1N1 is not fundamentally different from any other strain of influenza. Yes, it's not as well known to the body, but in the end it's just influenza. That's also why I believe the Mexican flu isn't worth the attention it gets. Of course we have to be careful and keep ourselves informed and of cause the current situation is worrying, but please, let's not hype the Mexican flu.

Every year thousands and thousands of people die becouse of flu. This one isn't different from the others!!!
