You cannot choose in which server to play. You get auto assigned to a server. By the way, MP is limited to 9 vs 9 and ping is a minimum of 100 ms by default. Nice, eh. :P
To avoid stuff like nade spam and the like you need admins. Which is impossible without dedicated servers. We currently run a 32 slot server without a hitch because of our admins. It's filled to capacity every day. (Look for ETS. Be warned though: it's a tactical realism clan. Not for little kids or for little kid behaviour.)
9 vs 9 is a joke as a max. Almost every server currently running for COD4 has a greater number of slots than 18. I think that says enough.

I guarantee you: no nade spam. No hip shooting rambo nonsense. No spawn tk's, or if they do happen: a swift and sure perma ban. All with a very high level of play quality with a lot of former service personnel from all over the world, mixed with regular people like me. That means real word tactics or an approach to real world tactics. (The physics of COD 4 make it impossible to make it perfect. For that you'd have to play ARMA, but that's not so great for MP.)

No, it's not. In a competitive environment it's not fun at all and outside it it's still bad form. You would destroy other people's fun to get your own? Not my idea of 'fun' at all.
I only found out yesterday that this is coming out on Monday. I have now pre-ordered it on PS3 :D

It can be played online, however, it will be with a match making service. There won't be dedicated servers and your ping is limited to 100 ms min. Furthermore there won't be a console. (No binds, no commands.) See the IW forum for more information.
COD rocks on the Xbox online, and I am sure the new one will be fantastic. I cannot wait.
