Brazil, an emerging market for the videogames industry, has finally seen the official launch of Sony's PlayStation 2 in the country.

However, with a price point of BRL 799 (USD 462) it's not clear quite how much impact the console will be able to have on a market that's considered to have a high threat from piracy.

It's expected that games will cost BRL 119 (USD 69) for new releases and BRL 99 (USD 57) for catalogue titles, with 14 games available at launch - including Gran Turismo 4 and God of War II.

"Brazil is home to a large community of gaming enthusiasts, making the country an ideal opportunity for SCEA to introduce the PlayStation experience to a new legion of fans," read a company statement.

10 years late? Nope, it's got to be a typo.

It's true. It was announced months ago and was like a (bad) joke here too. They blame piracy for not officially launching the console here, but having to import (and so having to pay like 150% more than overseas price) only boost it. As I see, PS2 have been sold in stores by around BRL 600, though almost everyone gets it for much less everywhere.

Wtf, if they're gaming enthusiasts, certainly they'd buy the PS2 from the internet. :)

Over the internet is just importing (and all the taxes I said).

For the PS3, for example. In major stores, the 80GB version with a single controller is like BRL 1500 (almost USD 900). Importing, summing all costs, may be like BRL 1300. But gamers can easily find for less than BRL 950.

Oh, okay, that's ridiculously expensive then :\

If you want an official Xbox360 here (buying in a big store), you'll pay ~U$1150 for a Go Pro (It's not even being sold in USA anymore :D).

that sucks man:(

This is Brazil...

:(
2009-11-28 02:05:54
but who blocked it? government?
2009-11-28 02:54:44
that's why you got so much phenomenal players in so much sports :)

The main problem is our high taxes. Sony and Microsoft don't make their consoles here, so if someone wants to sell it, must import these videogames and pay huge taxes. Of course, they want some profit, so they put the price even higher and we get these worths.

I don't know exactly why Microsoft and Sony don't sell directly here. It seems that it's due to piracy, but if we have this here, the main problem is exactly the prices that we must pay.

Ah, PES 2010/Fifa 2010 is costing U$115 here. :)

Microsoft already sells "officially" in Brazil, but its prices are set (by MS) too high, just like happens with Apple's Ipods, for example.
