Subject: who is most famous celebrity in your country?
pah if you take Freud we want Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart back ;-)
there might be many points of discussion between german/austrian nationality, but freud is clearly not german.
he was born 1856 in pribor (freiberg) in nowadays czech republic, at that time part of the austrian empire and lived most of the time in vienna.
the old german empire, which austria belonged to, ended 1806.
the only time he was german were the few days between the day the nazis occupied austria till he emigrated to london.
i doubt he even got a german passport.
mozart is a bit less clear, since the difference austria/germany didn't exist at this time in nowadays sense. but from austrian point of view, he is also clearly austrian.
but you can have hitler, we are less proud of him ;o)

mozart? you mean the guy that invented the chocolate balls? i always thought he was clearly austrian :)
i'd say so too, but some germans don't
he grew up in salzburg. at his time, salzburg - nowadays part of austria - was an independant principal within the holy roman empire. an other germany than the holy roman empire didn't exist at this time. the whole nowadays austria (excluding the burgenland) was part of the holy roman empire. so every austrian at this time was as much german as mozart was, or a bavarian, or a prussian, ...
if you understand german as people, not as a nation, then mozart was clearly german, but also all austrians are, including nowadays austrians, like me. same for the swiss.

well, hitler was realy an austrian, but not famous rather than infamous or notorious. His father was the uncle of his mother, that made him a bit ... say ... stupid.
Mozart I knew as an austrian, because born in Salzburg. But I agree after I read now from Freud, he was an austrian, too :o)
