austira was in hard situation after 1849.

in the prussian-italian-austrian war austria lost a lot of italian area, and the catholic austria was leaved out from the german unity.
the austrian finances was terrible, and the peoples wasn't content in austria and in hungary too. hungary didn't give up to be free, but wasn't enough strong to fight once more for freedom.

so the hungarian and the austrian politicans made a pact, called "kiegyezés" (compromise), and hungary give some freedom (parliament, goverment etc), but the leader was still the austrian king, franz joseph. the state department, the military and the finances was lead by austria and not freom hungary. for example: in the first war the hungarian didn't want to fight, but franz ferdinand did, and we couldn't do everything, because he was the military leader.


this compromise in 1867 was the birthday of the austro-hungarian empire: you can read the story of this compromise here

Why are Hungarians so sensitive about their history? It's not supposed to be offensive, I am just curious.

you are right, i was a little bit sensitive, but not because of the history. my problem was, how he relate for us. (hostile for us)
he said, that hungary is the same like the austro-hungarian empire. and we are "hostile for them".

this is a nationalist attitude. the history is just a reason to say, how they hate us. he want to legitimise with history their adverse attitude.
i think that it is sick, that his first stereotype was, that we are enemy. and his historical knowledge is really selective.

i hope you understand, what i mean. ;)

I think that he meant that the Aus-Hun Empire was hostile for them, not that Hungary is hostile...:)

well the topic is what do i asociate the country with. i know who helped austria... in that time etc. know very good history. but now i am subjective, and when someone(especially my classmate who studies in BUdapest) tells me about Hungary, i remember THE EARLY HUNGARIAN EMPIRE, when attacked Moldova, Romania... this is why i said hostile :D


EDIT:about the hostile thing it was a joke, than a truth, i have nothing to deal with. i just said so cause of some history interferrences.

zastarovje: yes, you´re right, but it´s the same as I always hearing from Hungarian users (not here, but mostly on eRepublik and other online forums), that my country is nothing more than upper Hungary...my blood is boiling in this situation, believe me...

Sure guys. Stereotypes are always annoying to recive!
I mean, the "game" of this topic could be funny, but we have to be carefull, becouse is very simple to make users angry.
So we must always to keep in mind we are all human beings, and there's no nation more or less glorious than others.
Foreign people always bother me saying "ahhhhhh... Italia mafia pizza pasta mussolini...". Well, most of the times is only to make a joke and have a laugh. But sometimes could be usefull to make a step back.

but u can agree that you are a bit too loud :)

as far as stereotypes for neighbouring countries go:
- the netherlands: dumb
- france: arrogant
- germany: unpleasant
- england: haughty
- luxembourg: we forget about them

maybe it's more interesting to stick to neighbouring countries. You can't have a good stereotype for every country and some countries (like italy and frnace) will get the same thing for everybody.
