Subject: Laptop Help?

2010-05-22 20:22:31
whatever you do, DONT buy any HP laptop and dont buy any laptop with AMD processor.

HP with AMD hardware gets super hot and doesnt last for more than one year.

If you want a gaming laptop you're going to have to pay a lot. I just wouldn't bother

If you want to stay MS: go for ASUS or Dell :)

Depends what you consider a gaming laptop. I've got a decent one for less than 750€. Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @2.5gHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT. I can play ever PES or FIFA edition I want, newest FM on full quality etc. Even SW: Force Unleashed.

2.5 still isn't much compared to what you could get on a desktop for the same price. I know I've got some pc games that are reasonably old that need 3gHz. Laptop gaming is expensive and a good way of overheating the machine, just don't think it's worth it.

True. But you know, I'm a student - no place for statioary pc and also need laptop for working in library

I got a refurbished from PCWorld for £280, I kinda need a new gaming card though.

It doesnt work like that anymore, current generation of processors are a lot more efficient on lower clocks, for example any current intel processor @ 1,8-2,0 ghz is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than any old pentium 4 at 3+ ghz

If limited gaming + working is what you are after, you are more or less like me :P I got myself a Dell Studio a year and a half ago, and I'm quite satisfied in both dimensions. Today you can get better computer for lower price, so you should be fine. My Dell hasn't explode, but I chose ATI gfx card, not NVidia :P
A few thibngs to consider: if you're going to play 3D games, you're likely to fry your laptop :P Thus, consider using a cooling pad when playing. Also check how "hot" the CPU is. You can roughly link temperature with a particular meassure of energy consumption, TDP (in watts). In essence, the lower the better. There's this cool site:
http://www.notebookcheck.net
where you can compare CPUs and graphic cards along some dimension (of which I understand at most one half :P). Back in 2008, the bottom line was "buy Intel P-XXXX rather than T-XXXX" to keep temperature down at a tiny performance loss. And leave AMD for your liquid-refrigerated desktop :P Nowadays, with the i-X family, I have no idea, but, unlike me, the site has been updated :P
If you are not a hardcore gamer, don't go crazy abouth the GPU. If you are a hardcore gamer, nothing you can buy with that budget will be good enough, so don't worry about either :P I do great with my ATI 3650, 256mb. Fallout 3 works smoothly, and that basically makes my day. That card is completely outdated now, so basically any independent graphic card will give you at least slightly more than what I have (but make sure to avoid integrated GPUs). RAM has also gone cheaper, but beware of the quantity vs quality trade-off. Modern processors and motherboards are able to communicate with memmory at high speed, but manufacturers still have lots of "slow" RAM chips (I've also seen people selling computers with faster RAM than the CPU can handle, but it's rare). Hence, they'll likely offer you a laptop with tons of 1066 Mhz (even 800Mhz) RAM memmory, which is not necessarily better than fewer, but faster (1333Mhz, 1600Mhz) memmory. I cannot really tell where the optimal point in this trade-off is, and price differences can be crazy, so all I'll tell is: ask around a bit :P

I would go with Toshiba.
At work we bought a Lenovo and is OK and a Dell that has lot of problems.
We had Toshiba notebooks working fine for more than 6 years (one lasted 8)

I've heard nothing good about Dell at any point

all i know that with Dell, my players might literally go on fire as Dells have a history of exploding :)

Well, i play a few online games;
-f1project.org
-sokker.org
-darkorbit.com

And then, for work;
-Homework
-Coursework for GSCE
-other random stuff lol
