Subject: Cumbria Shooting

Whitehaven

This coastal town of some 25,500 is where the first two suspected killings are believed to have happened.

Police were called to Duke Street after shots were fired.

It is understood 52-year-old Derrick Bird gunned down three fellow taxi-drivers, killing two of them.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Bird drive through the town with his gun hanging out of the window.

West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven declared a major incident.

Rowrah, near Frizington

This small village is the home of suspected killer Bird.

Local reports suggest he returned to Rowrah and killed his own mother.

Egremont

Shortly after the first shootings in Whitehaven were reported, police urged residents of Egremont to stay indoors.

It is believed a man was killed on Egremont bridge. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a victim lying in a pool of blood.

Seascale

Further shootings were reported in this village and beach resort.

It is understood two people have been killed in Seascale, and others injured.

A landlord - named locally as Harry Berger - was shot in the arm in Seascale and was recovering in hospital.

An elderly woman was reported as shot on Drigg Road in Seascale but the extent of her injuries were unknown.

Gosforth

A farmer's son was believed to have been shot dead at point blank range in a field near Gosforth, a small village near Seascale, of some 500 properties.

The victim was named locally as Gary Purdham, son of farmer John Purdham, at Low Boonwood Farm.

Boot

Bird abandoned his car in the hamlet of Boot and proceeded on foot.

Shortly after 2pm, police reported that they had found a body - understood to be Bird's - in woods near the hamlet.

Cumbria Police say 12 people (13 including Bird) have been killed and dozens injured in this tragedy. :(
