saw it on Ned2. Disgusting how food can be wasted. Even more disgusting what excuses they give themselves for keep doing it.
That could be somehow right, but that's not the whole story. For example, at the moment large companies, and even countries, rent large pieces of land in Africa to grow their crops, sometimes contracts are made for 100+ years. But to get that land gouverments first have to get rid of the farmerfamilies and sometimes complete villages and communities that are living of that land. So some people will find a new job but many loses everything and get absolutely nothing in return.
It's just a shame to see how, we (first world countries) deal with food while millions are literally dying of hunger, and knowing we produce enough to feed 2 times the ammount of people on this planet. Some say we need 2 or maybe 3 planets in the next 50 years to give everyone on this planet a good standard of living, but that's wrong, we already have enough. We just need to change our behavior.
And the problem is not only how we are dealing with food but also Africa itself. This is another docu I found really shocking, Darwin's nightmare (a bit older docu, but a good example).

It is not about how much food you buy, but what food you buy.
You create your own landscape. If you buy food for 2 euro per kilo, you know the food is coming from those mega farms. You buy it, they gain money and built another mega farm.
If you buy the more expensive food from the shop, it might well be from the cows you see in the landscape.
Same goes for a lot of other products.
There should be some sort of universal qualification on the food in the shops. Making the customers able to see how and where it was produced. Now it just says ´made in Country´ but not how it was made in that country.
We need to be more aware of what we buy. Now the main thing we look at is the price.

You can't expect a single indivual to make those kind of differences, that is just shifting the responsibility away from the ones who really have it. Awareness on its own won't change a thing. On its own, it only serves to make green people to feel really good with themselves. Awareness needs to be used in tandem with policy changes (gvmt and companies) to make a difference.
And a (big) part of the real waste comes from supermarkets throwing away perfectly fine stuff 'because the date has expired' (which, apparently, on most foods doesn't mean that the food has spoiled). 600 tons per story per year. This is out of the control (and knowledge) of normal people.

You are right when you say that changes need to be made on a larger scale by governments, but the individuals can make that happen.
The responsibility is on us all, not just the government. At least it is our responsibility to make that clear to them.
You think ´green people´ act the way they act because of their own wellbeing ? They might feel better because they eat food of a higher quality, but I don´t think they buy it for mental cleaning.

Individuals DO make a different.
I have seen in Canada (and also in other countries) how the market for organic and fair trade produce is growing. Where we put our money when we buy make a difference. Organic and fair trade are the way to go specially if you can find locally grow organic (we don't have locally in winter, but luckly California is not too far).
Also people tend to throw away things that are still working (specially electronics), we don't need a new phone every couple of years.

Try to deal with teachers and union workers that block entire highways just to call to modify our Constitution.

meanwhile, on the other side of the world...
An Australian man has been charged with assault after reportedly tattooing a 40-centimetre (16-inch) penis on his friend's back after an argument, police said Tuesday. Queensland police said a 21-year-old was facing two counts of assault -- the first for applying the indelible mark and the second for allegedly punching the victim.
Detective Constable Paul Malcolm said a 25-year-old man had gone to the alleged offender's house and "somehow in the course of the conversation the subject of tattoos came up".
"The victim wasn't interested at first but he was talked into it and he said he wanted a yin and yang symbol with some dragons," Malcolm said, according to Ipswich's Queensland Times.
"The bloke started doing the tattoo and there was another bloke standing there watching saying, 'Mate, it's looking really good'."
The victim was then allegedly punched on his way out, before he could check the ink work, which reportedly also included a misspelled comment about his sexuality.
"When he got home he showed it to the person he lives with and she said: 'I don't think it's the tattoo you were after'," Malcolm said.
The man who allegedly etched the tattoo will also face a public safety charge because he was not a professional tattoo artist and there could be hygiene issues, police said.
