OK thanks. I guess I could have done a search...but never did. What was the reasoning for it becoming part of Russia? that they needed a port? or that many of the people there were ethnic Russian ( or slavic ) and not Germanic?

That was certainly not the case, it was populated mostly by Germans I think. The main reasons I believe are compensation for Soviet Union for the losses in the war, and I believe the harbor indeed was important, for having a harbor that wasn't frozen in the winter (like St-Petersburg). But one may correct me, I'm not sure. I can't see another reason though.

I think the reason was simply reparation/compensation. The population was German (e.g. my grandmother's family originially comes from there) since the 13th century, but most of them fled when the Red Army was getting closer.

Russia needed a port. You need to see the progression of borders since 1700 to understand the why and how. It's not a question of how they got it, but how they lost everything else.

We saw the 2+4 treaty at university but never heard the german opinion apart from that they are not allowed to make any claims on the former prussian parts.

For me personally it doesn't really matter as I never got to know it any different. For people like my grandmother it's much different ofc because they had to leave everything behind and couldn't get back to where they felt at home.

Königsberg ofc. There are a lot of towns in Poland that are referred to with German names as well. That might also be because they are quite hard to pronounce the other way ;-)

Oh i know these topics for a while now...it is all scientific....it could happen, as much as global warming...
We depent on warm gulf stream and that belt is cut off by large qunatities of fresh melted water in the arctic...stuff like that...
It is possible...and it would effect lots of people and most are worst of than europeans who can take care....
but still; why bother if something might happen ....or not at all.....people are living on vulcano's anyways....it is part of life to go out and live! We, especially Scandinavian and Dutch people, tent to overeact when safety is concerned.
