Imagine yourself in East-Africa. You're starving. Not happy? Your own decision man! ;-)
Happiness is a choice if you have conditions for realization. As Rubinho says if you are starving in Africa happiness cant be a choice. But a lot of people in Europe have excellent conditions and still feel unhappy. It is their choice or better nature that they are not able to be happy, that they need always more and more and are not able appreciate real values in their life. In these cases is happiness a choice.

So somebody would like have a food,house,job and family but is starving in Africa close to be dead and happiness is how he can deal with this differences :) ?

This is funny comment. Communism is not bad, it is just impossible to have "pure" communism. Also capitalism is unsuitable system for some people. I had on my mind basic life condition. I knew a lot of people who were lucky also in communism.
i said it is mental statement which depends on the height of our requirements and includes attitude for life. Some basic requirements are common for all. To be healthy, to have enough food and place to rest ect. What i wrote is not valid for people who dont fulfill those. You cannot just easily deal with absence of basic needs.

Why do people keep posting happiness is a choice when it isn't :P Many people in poor countries are often really happy, but many people in rich countries often aren't. Why is that ... I know why, because to many first-world people think 'happiness' has something to do with owning stuff and money etc ;) But that's not happiness, in fact, these things often brings unhappiness as you will never have enough stuff or money when this is important to someone.
Just try to explain happiness in words ... leave the part of owning stuff and money out of it and ask yourself again if conditions for realization, that you all are talking about, are still that important ;) Then the answer is no because happiness is a feeling that everyone can have. Another thing, most of the time people aren't happy or sad but just are ...
If you try to explain happiness in words, in the end you will always come up with things you like to do and nice feeling you like to have or give to others, and that will give happiness :)

Some basic requirements are common for all. To be healthy, to have enough food and place to rest ect.
What is healthy? I have seen people in hospitals, knowing they had just a few weeks or month to live, still being happy ...
What is enough food? Can someone who is used to have 2 meals a day not be happy? On tv I've seen many happy kids in Africa that only have 2 meals a day but still happy ...
A place to rest, you mean a home? I've seen happy homeless people ...
etc etc
Happiness has more to do with acceptance and doing the things you like.

Even because there are so many definitions and books about happiness I have my own opinion :). I am talking about choice because it is really choice :).
(Except that cases where you dont meet the most basic life conditions.)

you can be happy suffering for hunger or battling someonelse's war..
as you can't be happy in the exactly same situation
Beside that, if you go and visit lot of poor countries you'll find a lot of more happy people than in rich ones..

Charles is citing all these riters, but there is a single source for happiness and all this filosophical words; the holy Bible...
but however charles did write a goo piece about the choice for happiness.
about Rubinho voting VVD; if you have realy insight in VVD, than you would know how many real leftwing people are in there!

@rumpil; communism isn't bad? the single most deadly lifeform ever to have existed?
Oh, there were people happy? maybe the few people on top, allthough they had to watch out aswell..? maybe some people living in the woods? nt thillions who were not ree or were in prison or were killed laughtere raped or families that were taken apart.
And that includes; russia and sovjet union, china ,north korea, cuba,eastern europe... yes those people were realy having fun weren't they...
The thing is, in reality communismnever worked nowhere ever, not even in the smallest of places withthe tinest communism.....and on the contrary; the rightwing capitalism is succesfull everywhere.
that does not mean there should be no corrections made, or individual additions or some socialism or collective needs done properly by the state.....one can fill their own needs there....
but to claim communism wasn;t bad is just as stupid as saying that capitalism is not succesfull....all you guys have, not only material also socially is done by capitalism, even your freedom and human rights!
