Subject: Space

2010-10-29 22:14:11
i won't argue much about this topic, cause i won't change my view. so:

It is impossible to be the only "living" planet in this gargantual universe. So i am sure there are a lot of other civilizations.
2010-10-29 22:16:30
My view is that there is basically a one in a billion+ chance of what happened to Earth that developed a sentient race, us, happening to another planet. I believe there is other life out there, but I'm not sure about the intelligence.
2010-10-29 22:17:41
this is all relative. we can be the civilization that lacks intelligence in comparison to other ;)
2010-10-29 22:20:42
But what does one define intelligence by? Ability to adapt? Because I doubt we can give a foriegn alien an IQ test.

My view is that all intelligence is developed subjective to the envirionment that the subject is made to adapt. If there are many predators, or if there is much prey to be hunted.

Until then, I'm happy flying around on Spore everyone now and again in my mission to destroy all 2400 of the final bad guys planets. Dum dee dum.
2010-10-29 22:22:35
you also play Spore? nicee :)

won't argue anymore, i see no need in this
2010-10-29 22:30:36
I call it a reasonable debate, we generally have the same view so you know,

I say Tomaato, you say Tomarto and all that.

Have you got to the centre of the universe yet and met Steve? :)

I thought bacteria have already be found in space.

No. I have found a link which claims bacteria were found up to 41km high in the earth's atmosphere, however the Karman line (the boundary between the atmosphere and space) is 100km high. In any case, I was referring to bacteria being found on other planets/moons.

But what does one define intelligence by?

Self awareness? The ability to communicate? Both apply to animals and humans here on earth, not so much smaller organisms like the aforementioned bacteria.

The earth has been around for 4.5 billion years, but only in the last 4000 or so years has mankind truly taken over the planet. 99% of our technological advances have occurred in the last 100 years (rough guess). We are living in such a tiny, tiny period of earth's history, so even if an alien planet harboring alien life developed on the exact same time scale as ours, but 0.0000001% ahead of us, they would be far and away superior to us. That 0.0000001% of 4.5 billion years is equal to 450 years.

I seem to remember something about bacterium on Europa, one of Jupiters(?) moons.

A simple Google search shows the top two hits as "Evidence of bacteria on Europa?" - the question mark says it all.

Mere speculation at this point!

I thought bacteria have already be found in space.

They thought they found evidence of life on Mars in the meteorite ALH 84001, but after more study it wasn't.

what's the temperature on the stars

I have absolutely no idea :P I only know that if a star like that explodes and is to close to our earth (measured in thousands of light-years) it can blow of our atmosphere at once. Creepy thought ..

a more advanced would already have found us.

except if the MIB really excist :)

Why should they have found us? Maybe they can't leave the planet that far, we can't. Maybe they don't want to be found, being found can mean the end of your planet (war, outer-space diseases brought by visitors etc). Or they live on the other far end of the universe, billions of light-years away and maybe it's just to far away. Besides, how do they know we live here, we are very small and aren't sending signals for that long. Our first radio-broadcast was just a bit over 100 years ago, and light not that much later. We aren't sending signals in space that long, and maybe we should stop doing it. Just think what people did when they discovered new land and what they did with the inhabitants. Besides, many inventions we have thanks to war, what if they are the same, or even worse ... :S
