The first gym is ALWAYS easy. (I remember I had to train Pidgeotto to Lvl 22 when I was six to beat Brock.)

But I beat Red with level 50 to 58 pokemon in Heart Gold (Gold for DS) a few days ago)

I was 6 - Pidgeotto's normal type attacks kinda failed vs Onix/Geodude. Later on I just used Mankeys Karate Chop/Low Kick or Nidorans Double Kick and its simple :P
