There were. Unfortunately for them, near that house (20 blocks) lies an above ground pool of lava (naturally, never seen one above ground before), so most things ended in that :P

If I wanted obsidian I'd spawn it, I couldnt get that much brick legitimately :P

No, but you can make one huge portal. I think.

You'd have to hack in portal blocks, portals only appear legitimately in an 5 high, 4 wide obsidian rectangle, when lit.
