To further add to the "broken window fallacy" argument as explained in the cato-at-liberty.org link on the previous page, I've yet to see free advertising benefits taken into account. Am I wrong in thinking that spreading music to a larger audience (by legal or illegal means - that's not the point) could lead to higher income through increased awareness of an artist/brand?

Imagine an artist is seen and heard by x% more people because of illegal sharing it could mean selling more tickets for concerts, more merchandise etc.

Obviously the industry has no interest in admitting that they are also benefitting from piracy indirectly - and they certainly would never include it in their phony calculations of "x million jobs lost because of internet criminals"...

The only thing I do have problems with by sharing copyright material the free way, is if these persons earn millions by sharing it, like that guy from Megaupload. He lived like a king, and that's not ok. To earn some money with adds on the site to cover the costs like servers and maintenance etc is fine, but don't make profits.

you are right. This is very big advantage of sharing. No need to big investments in advertisement if the piece of work is really good and people share it. It is often said that piracy is against authors, but that is not true. It is only against copyright monopol of big studios which are not able to adapt to development again and again (as I could see on the picture I posted). In fact it supports new creation. I see the future in closer relation between author and customer which means there wont be needed so many intermediates and author will receive much more % of what buyer pays. This will motivate buyer to support author which will be motivated to create more.


The argument about loses caused by piracy is total joke. It counts with that every single data which was downloaded would be bought if there was nothing like piracy.

It might also be differing from label to label. Everybody knows Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, etc. through radio or other non-internet media, so everything from Lady Gaga that is downloaded would otherwise maybe be bought. But for small artists and labels that might be the other way around. They can spread their music and try to reach more people. And there is also a point where an artist, that was made bigger by piracy and other forms of spreading is picked up by the mainstream media.

on megaupload...? wouldn't it be easier and simply better to have the backup on your gmail account?

It is easier to zip the whole thing (all the literature and stuff) every week and upload it.

Although now, I made a dropbox account. That is probably even easier as it synchronises the whole thing.
