Hi guys, I'm a total noob on the subject.
I need a device to read pdf files. It can be black&white, don't need wifi, movies etc. - it will be used strictly for work.

I need something cheap and good. Any ideas?

A printer :-)

I have one ;). The thing is that I have to print a lot [300 pages this month] so in long-term I will spend more on the printer than I would on a simple e-book reader...:)

I translate books so basically month after month I will have to print 200+ pages

I've found some site that was advising buying kindle, but it seemed like a typical advert site...

click - is it a good idea to buy it? seems as simple as possible, the price is not that bad [well, at least comparing to ipads...;-)]

I'm just not sure about the size of the screen, is it enough to read comfortable with the kindle lying on the desk, or do you have to keep it closer to your eyes?

Dont worry, there is a zoom function for elderly.

The kindle is excellent mate - my wife also has one and you can read it almost anywhere !

my kindle was £85 and the books are very well priced also , loads of free books and books at whatever price you wanna pay really , i like football autobiographies and books by , sam bourne , chris kuzneski , steve berry and david gibbins among others

as for the screen you can have it as close or as far away as you wish , i can read it easily lying down with it on the floor and holding it like a book - its an impressive bit of technology :)

ps , thats the exact kindle i purchased :)

sounds awesome :)

I'm translating a football biography at the moment and using the pdf on an e-book would make it much simpler - no need to print etc. Once I went to the library and forgotten to print the next part that I was going to translate - had to go back home and then return back, not a nice thing to do when it's -15 degrees ;).

Never really liked the idea of reading books on it though, but who knows - maybe I'll get used to it. Especially with traditional books being so expensive...

as I've said, I don't need it to browse the internet or look cool, so a simple kindle might just be the thing that I need, thanks for help :)

Ah alright, it's your job :)

I found on a price comparing site in the Netherlands these are the cheapest (incl starting prices and best reviews of users):

Archos 70 eReader - €70,08 (7th place of 33)
Difrnce EB510 TFT - €79,00
Icarus Reader Go - €92,00 (4th place of 33)
Archos 70b eReader - €93,00 (5th place of 33)
Difrnce EB500 TFT - €99,95
Difrnce EB710 TFT - €99,95
Mpman ColorEbook 7 - €100,06 (10th place of 33)

But on this site I found really cheap ones, bigboxsave.com. Or ebay.com ofcourse :)

But Kindle is also mentioned on a lot of sites that I found. Starting prices mostly from around €100,00 or so, but I also found €80,00.

I own a kindle and I recommend it. It's truly amazing, especially the e-ink technology, which makes it better than any tablet if you want a device just for reading. It also comes with an integrated dictionary, which might be handy if you're translating stuff. ;-)

Thanks a lot! Just one last question, for how long can your kindle work without being charged?

@Charles
I'll check them as well, thanks :)

I have a Sony Touch PRS-650. Cheap, no wi-fi, no nothing. Basic e-reader using eInk (magic ink). Battery can last for 3-4 weeks when not in use!

Absolutely love it and it doesn't have the problems with locked file formats like Kindle etc.
