It has influences from German but the base is the latin that was spoken during the roman empire.
I have heard it once when I was in Switzerland, but the people who speak it usually also speak a german dialect, so I talked in german with them.

its quite more closer to latin, than other modern languages, because of isolation of these people in the mountain country of Alps...this language was minimally evolved during centuries and people are proud of it...you can consider it as hybrid of Latin base and modern Italian and bit of German language

Its used in these areas of Switzerland:

it's not latin it's a romance language.. and yes people speak this language as their mother tongue mostly in kanton Graubünden .. there are about 35'000 speakers...
Since I'm living in Switzerland I hear it often .. it sound's like a mix of Italian and Portuguese language.

The ugliest language is german, I hate it :-(
but holiday in germany has been so cool

german is slightly harder due to 4 cases and some differences in changing verbs trough persons (ich, du...)

Please....meet Welsh, the language with the most stupid rules.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/learnwelsh/pdf/welshgrammar_allrules.pdf - 87 pages of grammar rules

Then there are further "cultural" difference between South and North Wales....

horrible horrible language

Dutch is also fun then. Not too many rules ... but probably 87 pages of exceptions to them :P
