The World's Most Reputable Universities
Its second annual reputation ranking, which identifies the top 100 universities in terms of academic prestige, is based on a global, invitation-only opinion poll carried out by Ipsos for Times Higher Education’s rankings data supplier, Thomson Reuters. This year they received 17,554 responses from senior, published academics.
Forty-four universities on the list are located in the U.S., making it the most represented country by a landslide. The U.K. follows with 10 representatives, then Japan and the Netherlands with five each.

The endless lists with 'best' and 'most prestigious' ... and whateveryoucanimagine universities. Each time checking different stuff and each time pretty different lists. Well, that's besides the classic ones like Harvard, Cambridge, ...
There's only 1 thing important when picking your university: choose one where you feel at ease, in a city that has something to offer.

He is asking for prestigious universities, not where he feels at ease, so his degree means a bit more as just a university. So the most important thing is to pick a university employers are impressed by if you have your degree from that university, and that aren't only the classic ones.
From his point of view (VUB), I can understand he doesn't like the lists of universities :D
I just give him the advice of ignoring prestige and go for a 'feel at ease' one. Unless he is a really smart guy, chances he'll end up at a job position where the employer really cares about the university you studied at, are 1 in a 1000.
The only thing they asked me about my university so far was: why did you study in X while Y is closer to your home?

They could ask you this because you have chosen just a university, not for example one of the world top 20 universities. If you had chosen for one of these universities your job interview would most probably had been nothing more as a formality as your degree would have outranked all others interested in that job. Businesses know what universities are the best in the world in their sector/area. And also, they would never have asked you why you have chosen that prestigious university and not one closer at home like they did now with your job interview ;)
The problem is that you need money, real money, not 2-3000 euro, to finish one of the top university, you can be the smartest man in the world, if you do not have 100-300k euro ready to spend, then you just can dream about that university.

As one of the smartest people in the world you don't have to worry about the money because there are scholarships easily available for such people. Other than that you are correct.
