Subject: European Union

But it's still a European union, not a worldwide one.

dont worry mate i dont feel offended, most of turkish people think like you and dont want to join eu;) it isnt reach nirvana for us.
2010-12-18 13:51:34
But Turkey is in Europe. It's a geographical fact. Any European country should be allowed to join as long as they live up to the Copenhagen criteria.

There are many different definitions of what can be considered Europe and what not. I have a book showing at least 9 borders that have been made throughout history. 5 out of these 9 borders consider Turkey partially to be part of Europe. Some borders go way beyond the Bosporus, but neither of them includes Turkey in total.

Yet modern day Turkey is within the geographical definition of Europe; not all of it of course. But neither was all of Denmark, when we joined in 1973. Greenland which constituted the majority of the Danish territory back then lies in North America. Surely we can deconstruct every concept in the world, but it's a rather common conception that Turkey geographically is a part of Europe and hence should be considered as such, if they want to join the EU.

Of course the dominant perspective has been reproduced, as there are talks with Turkey. Aim of my post was to say that it is however not totally illegitimate to think that Turkey is part of Europe.

maybe clever US government and OSN will decided to divide Turkey and just that small part which is in Europe will became member :-DDD

You know, like USA decided that Kosovo will not be Serbia, because they want it so :-)

True, I know that too. Part of Turkey is European, but I'm sure you know what I meant. East Thrace is about 3% of Turkey, with a population of 10 million on over 75 million in whole Turkey. Kazakhstan is a European country too then? Just like Georgia and Azerbaijan? ( Armenia isn't in Europe at all ) Nope for me, all of these countries aren't European for me. 'My Europe' is based on geography, tradition and history.

Btw, I don't know this, but hasn't Greenland always had a special status? Or was it prior 1985 a real part of EU?
i hope that the next state is croatia which will be a member.

from januar hungary will carry the presidency of the council of EU, and the membership of croatia will be one of the most important priority.
hungary support the enlargment of the eu, especially on balkan. we would like to speed up the joining of serbia too.
Why? It's going to fast imo. I would never have let the 10 countries in 2004 in the union in one time.

from januar hungary will carry the presidency of the council of EU, and the membership of croatia will be one of the most important priority

This kind of frightens me. When you have the presidency, you shouldn't use that to let 'mates' of you in the union - not really letting in, but fastening it. That's not the point of the presidency.

And I'm not against the European Union, but I'd like to see further integration with UK & Ireland, Scandinavian countries, Germany, Benelux, France, Switzerland and Austria.

all what you write shows that you live in west-europe, and arent inerested in "our" problems.
i can understand that for you is more important what in west-europe happens, but i hope that you can accept that for me is more important what here in east-europe happens.

you think that the joining of croatia is "mates of us"? LOL :)
every policy is "mates of somebody". merkel or sarkozy etc. did as they think about EU. what hungary is going to do will show what we think about the EU. as i told you, the hungarian goverment supports the enlargment. this isnt "mates of us", this is what we think about the EU. dont you like it? what can i do? there are many things, what i dont like, but happens in west-europe.

The main concern of the EU should be the financial crisis which is targetting Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy.

Enlargement is for a latter stadium but I consider croatia a worthy candidate.
Of course I understand. Of course most of the Eastern European countries want to join EU. And I can't blame them, they're right.

That's exactly why I don't support the enlargement. Eastern Europe has a totally different opinion about the Union than the old EU-countries. Mates was by the way not a good choice of words, that's why I put it between quotation marks. Btw, what happens in Western Europe that you don't like?
the greatest problem in the EU that there are at least two judgement. the old states live for ages in free world, and did everything what is needed to for the sustainable development. but we have to invest and sacrify (not only financial, but mental too) many thing for it.

the last example:
what happend when an old counties (already has euro) ruined the mastricht criteria? nothing at all. maybe it will change, but this is only a promise. the EU isnt so permissive whit the new countries.

nowadays in hungary the goverment is going to ruin the non-state pension. do you know why? because we have to achieve a lot of international contract and hold our budget in balance, but the non-state pension costs too much for budget. we asked the EU to account this money for budget, but they said NO (merkel, we love you). the new countries, and sweden support it, but the "old countries" didnt. after that the hungarian goverment said: okay we will take all this money (my privat money!) back.
do you know what the newest news is? the EU is ready to account the non-state pension too for budget. but its too late, i lost my money, and we all suck it, because the solidarity in this terrible financial crisis dosent work.
the ageing in the EU, especially in hungary is one of the greatest problem. the actual pension system will be ruined. in west europe the non-state pension is an old system, but for us, who lived in socialism, was only state pension. we have to invest a lot of money to this system now for our future.

i'm angry with my goverment and angry for the stupid european politicians too. when they saw, that not only hungary is the only who is going to ruin the non-state pension, they've got frightened, and changed their mind. it was too late.

but that is only one example. and i know, that this isnt so important for you, but i may not became any pension, when i will be old.

the old countries has more authority, and they judge the "old" and "new" countries not in the same way. thats the greatest problem.
or sometimes, when its terrible for us they judge us like you. but only when its good for the old countries.

That's nonsense. The 'new' countries also have mandatories in the parliament and the commission.
Yup true story, not everything the EU does is good but sometimes it's pretty brilliant.

What I do hate in the EU is that the Brits are so arrogant. They want privileges for everything.
Sometimes I'd just say 'if you don't want us than don't bother crossing the channel and stay on your island'

That's nonsense. The 'new' countries also have mandatories in the parliament and the commission.

first: the european policy isnt only what you see in the parliament. there are "informal" policy too which is at least as important as the "viewable" policy.
second: the old countries has more congresman. they can veto everything what they want.

and what is this discussion about? about our greatest problem, that there are two different europe. the old and the new. and nobody can understand the others problem. :S
