It's difficult to choose only five players and I think it is wrong to compare players from different ages. Anyway I choose from the last 20 years, the ones I followed on tv:

1. Zidane
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
3. Maldini
4. Messi
5. Ronaldo (if it wasn't for his injuries would be first i think)

2 Ronaldo Bre
3 Ronaldo 7
4 Higuita :-p
5 Victoria Beckam

Old topic, but anyway.. here we go..

Cristiano Ronaldo (POR) / no1 player..
Kaká (Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite) (BRA) / years around 2008 with ACM.. great player, great team
Ronaldinho (BRA) / pleasure to watch..
Shevchenko (UKR) / no2 attacker for me.. same as Kaká
Henry (FRA) / no1 attacker.. and person..

I like ACM, Arsenal and Real Madrid.. so.. pretty simple votes.. I voted only players which I saw by eye.. maybe there are and were better players, but.. not for my eyes and heart :P

I don't see any player ever to be or have been better than Leo Messi.
The most complete player ever known on earth...

Best keeper: Courtois or Neuer
Best defender: Maldini
Best central midfielder: Ronaldinho
Best winger: CR7
Best Striker: Cruijf

Messi lacks heading skills to be the most complete. Imo CR7 is more 'complete'. Messi beats CR7 on certain abilities (playmaking, ...). And well, neither of them knows what defending is, so bye bye "complete" anyway :)

CR had some important matches where he was helping with def also.. for example in ManU.. u can see a lot of vids when he runs with ball over whole pitch after free kicks, corner kicks a lot of more.. but he was in midfield and now is attacker, so yes.. now is defending not his priority but.. when he had to, he did everything what he had to do..

For me is CR the most complete player in the world.. great athlete.. great technique.. great shooting.. great skills.. fast as hell.. stability, great physical condition.. awesome header.. free kicks.. and decend passes also.. + hes great leader (for national team for example..) and he have a lot of moral abilities to be great footballer..

Messi.. hes great with ball.. but team & NT play for him almost his whole carrer.. hes great, but complete? I think.. in BPL he gonna be average player.. as in NT (usually)..

But hes in Barca and for Barca hes doing great.. so yes, hes excelent player which was gifted by God.. but the msot complete? No way..

Messi beats CR in pretty much every ability, except heading, physical strength and perhaps something like scoring instinct.

You have cr7 fans and you have messi fans.
Ronaldo is 1 of the best players in the modern football, but imo Messi is out of the league completely. The things he does with a ball are insane! And don't say Messi cannot play the ball with his head. I think he's the first choice if you can build a team with the best on earth. Thing is, Ronaldo is a complete winger/striker but Messi, for a midfielder to make so many goals, give so many assists... He makes the action from his own pitch half.
And in Barca or even in J-league... Messi will always give the team an additional 50% just on his own.

It's what a central striker in the box needs and that's why CR is the best poacher of his era, maybe ever. Messi scores almost the same amount of goals but on top of that is a brilliant playmaker. He is often involved in the creation of his and other goals directly.

If we talk about other abilities in which Messi has the edge I could name dribbling, agility, shotmaking, technique, decisions, playmaking, passing, vision and the list could go on.

Both Messi and CR worked a lot more defensively in their earlier years. It's why I don't really like them anymore - their teams defend with 9 field players most of the time now. Especially the low amount of distance Messi covers per game now is totally ridiculous.
