actualy you can say "they are afraid" as well or "they're frightened" or whatever....

the reason why is Polish language and English they have totaly different construction and you cannot compare or translate directly. In those sentences English people always use passive voice. In Polish we have only three tenses. If I use passive voice in this example you would see completely different words so I tried to explain even if I make a mistake which was deliberated.
