So what is the difference between conductor and ticket collector?
2007-11-07 21:35:53
Conductor is the guy that drives the vehicle. Ticket collector is the guy who checks everyone has got a ticket for the trip.

Conductor and collector both check for tickets. The collector takes the ticket with him or tears a part of it, I think. You'll probably find conductors only in the train and maybe also in the tram or bus. Don't know where you'll find collectors, but I think at the movies or at some big events or something.

The one who drives the vehicle is just called the driver in English. Collector and conductor are both French loanwords. In Dutch we don't have a word for collector as it's always done by the security, police or city inspectors:

conductor = conducteur
driver = machinist in trains or more industrial machines
driver = chauffeur in the bus, car, taxi, etc.
