It would have worked a lot better if they had gone for the width approach. Fortunately, we managed to get away with it this time.

Sorry, I wrote before you wrote. Now, I understand you.
2006-05-13 18:39:33
Indeed ... you managed to get away with it :D

I shouldn't help anyone, but I think kuwonny is right - kind of an awkward tactic and a lucky victory....

Congrats - England is through :))))

It's more a specialist tactic. Probably not worth gambling with in the future unless the opposition is near certain to play out wide.
2006-05-13 18:45:32
I think you can try such tactic and agree your idea. But, for the fan's sake, please do in freindly. :)

Aye. Anyway, a win next week against SA needs to be as big as possible.

The way the draw is going to work, is much like the cup system, as in teams will be seeded. So to have the best chance possible, it's going to be necessary to try and get the 2nd seed spot, assuming Poland get no 1.

The probem is .. that you can never be certain :)
OK - I see your point on making this tactic :)))

The problems with tactic in this match were:
*Harper had too much work to do in central sectors. Every time he left his position to get the ball, there was a danger of passing. Just like that when England lost a goal
*Henchoz, Lepore too wide; they made a free slots for Canadian strikers
*hospitality in defensive midfield ;)

To cheer you up - as long as you win, none should say that the tactic was bad :]
But beware of losing ;)

I know all about iffy tactics causing losses. Luckily, they've happened only in friendlies.

And in league matches against me :-p

Poland aren't all that far ahead anymore, which is nice to see. Maybe even beatable.
2006-05-14 13:19:14
They haven't been using their best players though, which is creating a bit of a false impression.

They should get 65+ easy with a full strength side.
2006-05-14 13:38:29
Oh. In that case: Damn, Poland are still a bit good. Guess we're all fighting for second best for a while yet.
