its not. apparently Account number is meant to be 8 characters mine shows 9 characters
You might recieve it in a couple of days time, they tend not to send both things in the one package, as if its stolen money can be taken from your account easily, I'd wait a couple of days.
i have just received a letter from the bank. it contains my details but when i register for online banking it dont work. why?
With the last account I set up for online use, I had to phone up to get the accounts turned into online ones and verify it was me. After that it was fine.

I bank with Alliance & Leicester, and mine also shows 9. However, it starts with two 4's and i think you are meant to ignore the first 4. That is my account number.
Don't know if it's the same for you, though.

I am with HSBC. The big 16 number across the middle of the card works like this:
[1234][121212][12345678]
Obviously it does not have brackets, they are there just to show blocks.
Block 1 is irrelevant.
Block 2 is your branch's sort code.
Block 3 is your account number.
I don't know if HSBC Local Bank means something different to a regular HSBC bank. If it does the above might not be right.
