I like the decent of the thing from harmless fun into carnage.
1) A girl with child on a donkey would be led through town to the church, where the donkey would stand beside the altar during the sermon, and the congregation would "hee-haw" their responses to the priest. how we laughed
2)Late in the 14th century, a custom would develop where the girl would process out and be slapped in the rear end by the entire congregation. Hmmmm.
3)This practice was resurrected by the Borgia family upon their accession to the Renaissance papacy in which crude parodies and orgies would be staged to commemorate the event. Woppa? Is that you?
