Subject: Recommend a laptop

2008-02-02 23:32:12
My 2 year old Toshiba laptop has died. For a while it has been temperamental in switching on. It's not a battery problem, nor a CMOS RAM problem. The local PC doctor has said that it is probably motherboard related and would cost £140++++ to mend & told me to get another un.

So what should I get? Another Toshiba so I can share peripherals, a Dell? Another brand? An Apple?

What do I need? Nothing much. All we do is surf the internet, iTunes, burn the odd CD and DVD & slight excel use. So we just want something that boots up quickly, has good battery life, and is pretty robust. Hopefully something that will last >2 years this time.

try acer fairly cheap and my other half has had hers just over a year now with no problems.

I swear by Sony, apart from the price...

Dells seem to be fairly reliable from my experience, you can start paying back in 12 months aswell too, I think.

both true - I get them for work, they are heavy but don't break.

I recommended PB, as I've had mine just over a year now, not a single problem, really non.

Getting a better opinion than mine though, is highly recommended!

I'll build ye one ;)

Dell usually reliable, toshiba are generally fine, sony are good.

To be fair, you just one a decent amount of hard drive space and memory these days ;)

Just like oxolotl says... Dell, Toshiba, Sony!

Stay away from HP (Compaq) or some cheap dodgy brand names...

My wifes is Compaq and is temperamental....stay well clear. I know someone with a Sony which is still going strong without issues 2 years later, the price is obviously higher with them though.

@wdp74 - *Spelling and all too revealing* - 'my wife is compact and is tempramental'... though I see little connection to the topic being discussed. ...and I had absolutely no intention of getting anywhere near her! I wouldn't Toshiba her even ... ahh nevermind.

Yeah id agree with oxo and Rog with Dell and Toshiba but would stay away from Sony as there good but more expensive for what you get than the others.

I'd go for the Toshiba one myself (what I currently use now). I had a Fujitsu Siemens one before and it was nothing but trouble.

The old Toshiba one I had (1.5ghz celeron thing) is still going strong to this day I have been told (sold it to a mate a few years back).

i'd go for iBook... It may only be a problem if you want to play games requiring windows

And the fact that apple hardware is even more expensive than Sony which is saying something. Im not the biggest fan of apple there stuff looks pretty but is no better than alot of other stuff for half the price.

A couple of months ago I bought a Dell Lattitude and its sound system didn't work anymore after two months. Two months later I needed to install a new network card and the first screw was dropped and I also needed to fasten my monitor. Besides that I haven't had any problems (yet), but my friends needed to wait 4 months before it could be delivered.

actually there are some advantages, as apples are usually less heavy + their batteries last longer
