could be an idea, would have to check with the missus, though reapers on so she'll probably say no
That's probably OK with me, but i'm easy most nights.
What's everybody's favourite character and kart/bike combination, or do you change per cup/course?

I've recently unlocked Toadette, and just glided through the Star Cup (150cc) on the Bullet Bike after struggling with it for some time. This then unlocked the Quacker bike which is a light bike and is absolutey immense for Grand Prix racing...really high Acceleration, Handling, Drift and Mini-Turbo but low Weight and Speed.

First attempt at 150cc Leaf Cup and got a 2* rank :-O
I got something called a Turbo Blooper, which looks a little like someone hovering from the back.

Can't say that I've unlocked Toadette yet, but I have unlocked the baby characters and Birdo. Guess I'm not as committed as some :)

I'm persevering with PES 08 first before making a committed assault on mario kart.
I do go a bit hellbent on trying to unlock everything...these are the characters i've got so far:

King Boo - Win 50cc Star Cup
Diddy Kong - Win all 50cc Cups
Mii (Outfit A) - Win 100cc Special Cup
Dry Bones - Win 100cc Leaf Cup
Funky Kong - Unlock 4 Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials
Birdo - Play Time Trials on 16 different courses/Get 250 wins online
Toadette - Play Time Trials on all 32 different courses
Rosalina - With a Super Mario Galaxy save, win a series of Grand Prix cups/Without Galaxy save, Attain at least 1 Star Rank for all Mirror Retro Grand Prix Cups (did it with a Super Mario Galaxy save, handily)
none of that made any sense to me at all. are we playing the same game ?

i got the 50cc stuff actually, i think i;d get bored at that level, managed top 3 in 150cc on all cups, just not won any of them.
(edited)
I've simply written the names of the characters i've unlocked and what you have to do to unlock them, but if you've bought it to simply play with friends or online then i don't expect that to make too much sense ;o) but if you want to get different characters and faster karts and bikes then you need to do lots of time trials (and do well at them) and do lots of single player Grand Prix racing (winning and getting gold on all cups at 50cc, 100cc and 150cc).

Anyone still playing this? My brother has buggered off to Tenerife, so I can nick his 30ft extension cable to finally test out some online play this week.

On the unlocking characters front, I've won gold on 50-Mirror without too much trouble (the Mirror Flower proved the trickiest), but still have two ? characters to unlock. Going by Jimmy's list I have Daisy but not:

Funky Kong - Unlock 4 Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials
Birdo - Play Time Trials on 16 different courses/Get 250 wins online
Toadette - Play Time Trials on all 32 different courses
Rosalina - With a Super Mario Galaxy save, win a series of Grand Prix cups/Without Galaxy save, Attain at least 1 Star Rank for all Mirror Retro Grand Prix Cups (did it with a Super Mario Galaxy save, handily)

Birdo and Toadette should be easy enough, any idea where those 4 Expert Staff Ghosts are, and wtf is a SMG save when it's at home?! I bought SMG but haven't opened it yet as I'd rather 'perfect' the Karting first.

I haven't played for a while...i've got something like 3 golds on the Mirror Cups at the moment, but went back to get decent ranks on the normal 50cc.

To unlock an expert staff ghost you must challenge the standard Nintendo ghost on any course and beat it by around 5 seconds to unlock the expert Nintendo ghost. Do this on 4 different tracks to get Funky Kong.

I think you've answered your own question on the SMG bit...if you have played SMG and made a save game on it, and then when a few Grand Prix's it will unlock Rosalina. If you don't want to open your SMG yet, then you have to do the much harder thing of getting a 1* rank on all of the Mirror Retro Grand Prix's.

So play SMG a bit, save the game, put Kart in, win a few grand prix and I'll get Rosalina? Cheers.

I heard from another mate that getting 1* on every possible GP unlocks the last character - Mii Outfit number 2. I've a feeling that might drive me nuts if I attempted it, but we'll see...

Yes to the first bit, it may even automatically give you Rosalina once you make the save and boot up Mario Kart, give it a go...

I think to unlock the second Mii Outfit you have to unlock all 32 expert staff ghosts.

Yeah you're right - I've got Rosalina and Dry Bowser left for the main characters, and Mii Outfit B of course. Missing 3 karts and bikes too, so once the Dry Bowser is earned I'll have to attack the Time Trials in hardcore fashion. I've got about 12/32 expert ghosts, but I'll need to match up the right character and vehicle to get the rest.

Scuse my ignorance, but what's an SMG ?
