Subject: Mario Kart Wii.

Teeny screens! No, i didn't think it was too great either, but then all of the Mario Kart's are highly addictive, and the GC one was no different.

right.

questions.

I am doing OK at this very silly game but it is very annoying when I keep getting shot with shells, bananas, lightening and a bird-thingy. How can I stop this?

How good do you have to get before you can compete online effectively?

I like playing as baby peach - does that mean I should be on Megan's list?

Shells - green ones you can avoid - red ones I think you're stuck with once they've locked onto you.

Bananas - just drive round them.

Lightning - Unavoidable, unless you happen to be invincible or double size at that time.

Bird-thingy - I think you only get that if you're in 1st place. Well done. also unavoidable though.

In general, the key seems to be to get a power-up as soon as possible, and try to get to the next power-up / the one after, just after your current power-up.

Also, try and avoid crowds, if you get caught by a crowd online, the whole thing becomes a random mess of weapons until you dust yourself down and find yourself in last.

Oh, and you can slipstream your opponents, if they're daft enough to just travel in a straight line. you get these blue lines which increase and turn into like a blue wind tunnel kind of ball, which gives you a speed boost.

I'd say you would be ready for online now. In the online version you will find your own level soon enough. They have a ratings system similar to the method that SK uses for fan club size, it is scarily accurate. If you find you're getting tonked every race, just leave the "race thread" you're in, and re-join another.

1 nice touch I noticed last night is that you can join your friends' race threads. I saw kipper online, and attempted to join his thread, only for him not to appear in the next race, which was a shame.

Ta. I will take a butchers tonight. How do I add pals then?
2008-04-22 13:10:03
Just go to the Nintendo Wi-Fi channel, then click friends, then add a friend. You'll need their friend code, they will need yours.

cheers - i usually play with the grandma mii as donkey kong or bowser. We've got a Granddad one too, so it looks authentic when we both play. The missus knocked up a Genghis Khan Mii a few weeks ago (she makes them for the mii contest channel), so I sometimes race him as Baby Peach.

In-correct
Green shell - correct.
Red shell. look behind u and drop item in front of it.
Lightning - Correct

Winged Blue Shell - Drift heavily, and when you get turbo, release the drift as it is about to slam.
With perfect timing, you can escape the blast.
As a bonus, any slip streamers will be wiped out.

In addition to what NCN said, you can avoid red shells by having the spinning green shells (i think) and also the trailing bananas are handy for the same thing.

Searingblade has kinda beat me to it; and i took my presumptions from old games...there are a lot of little decent tricks which is partly why this game was so blinding.

To be decent on GC version and beat the Nintendo ghosts you had to drift boost even in straight lines.

I don't get drifting, which might be why my online rating is below 5000. It's still bloody good fun though.

its the b-button when you go round corners, it means that you keep your speed up.
2008-04-22 19:25:00
I've now had about 3 races and the first thing i've noticed is that you can't jump.

Or can you?
2008-04-22 19:30:30
no, i don't think you can anymore, used to love jumping into corners
2008-04-23 01:04:54
Yep, that was how you used to drift on the SNES and GC versions...jump then hold one of the back buttons when turning...when the boosters turn a certain colour, let go.

I think that was it anyway...i remember on the SNES version that you could actually jump certain obstacles i think.
2008-04-23 12:01:08
So? It's fun to watch a tail gater get annilhated by the winged shell u dodged
2008-04-30 17:57:24
I just realised i had drift on automatic...so you sort of can jump...just not over obstacles (you could on the SNES version).

As an additional point, if you hold right on the d-pad when you have a green/red shell, ? box or single banana, you do not need to look behind you when locked on by a red shell...it will just hit it automatically. I find it is always a good idea to keep the item behind you as anybody crashing in to your rear also spin out.

I like the fact there are many tracks from old versions of the game...very awesome.

How is everybody doing on unlocking all the characters etc? I've managed all the gold trophies on 50cc...on to 100cc now, and i'm not in to these bike things.
